  • Denbinobin, a naturally occurring 1,4-phenanthrenequinone, inhibits HIV-1 replication through an NF-kappaB-dependent pathway.

    John S James
    20 Nov 2008 | 11:49 am
"Anthraquinones and structurally related compounds have been recently shown to exert antiviral activities and thus exhibit a therapeutic potential. In this study we report the isolation of the 1,4-phenanthrenequinone, denbinobin, from a variety of Cannabis sativa. ... These results highlight the potential of the NF-kappaB transcription factor as a target for natural anti-HIV-1 compounds such as 1,4-phenanthrenequinones, which could serve as lead compounds for the development of an alternative therapeutic approach against AIDS." • Indian Law Criminalizing Homosexuality Remains 'Major Obstacle' in Fight Against HIV/AIDS, Piot Says

    John S James
    20 Nov 2008 | 11:41 am
"UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot on Sunday said that an Indian law criminalizing sex between men is a "major obstacle" to the country's efforts to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, News Track India reports. Piot called the law a "violation of human rights" and said that it should have been abolished a long time ago. The law is being deliberated during hearings on a petition to decriminalize homosexuality."The United Nations last week called on India to decriminalize homosexuality, effectively overturning the law that has been in place since British colonial rule and carries either a lifetime…
  • Scientists Self-censor In Response To Political Controversy, Survey Finds

    John S James
    20 Nov 2008 | 11:09 am
"A survey of scientists whose studies became the focus of a public debate about NIH grant funding has found that many of them engaged in self-censorship as a result of the controversy. The study found that following the criticism of their research, scientists removed politically sensitive language from grant applications and stopped studying certain topics."These self-censorship tactics were employed despite the fact that all of the criticised studies—most of which investigated sexual behaviour, drug-use, and other HIV-related questions—were defended in an NIH internal review and retained…

  • Mobile phones: exceptional tools for HIV/AIDS, health, and crisis management

    John S James
    20 Nov 2008 | 10:32 am
"Perhaps one of the most promising emerging health systems tools, which can build capacity around the HIV/AIDS response and filter into the global health response, lies increasingly in the palms of our hands."Mobile telephones are reaching people in Africa's cities, towns, villages, and countrysides more rapidly than anywhere else in the world (figure 1).2 The overlap with the global health-care crisis does not go unnoticed. We previously reported that despite very low incomes, most clients attending two University of Nairobi clinics (serving sex workers and providing HIV services for the…

    21 Nov 2008 | 3:06 am
Whatever I had is finally leaving my body. With the time change, and the late nights of Nyquil-induced slumber, I went three days without seeing sunlight. But now, I'm ready to re-emerge among the living, and the bright flashes of sunlight that greeted me today in the cold, brisk, air only made it apparent that I'd missed my deadline for my 2nd book. To have my next book- a vampire book- completed and sent to my high falootin' NYC agent by the time Twilight hit theatres was a great plan, the hope being to have my book published before the second Twilight movie sucks the genre dry. But my…

I can't take any pills for the kind of lingering cough I have right now, so my only prescription is some herbal remedies and an excessive amount of E.R. episodes. For those who don't know, E.R. is a television show about a hospital in Chicago called County General. New interns unwittingly enter, believing they will learn what it takes to become successful doctors. Those who have been around keep the dark secret of County General under wraps, never telling the newcomers that the place was built on an ancient Indian burial ground. Hoping they will take over so that they the elder doctors can…

In the last week, Gwenn and I sent out about 800 postcards to colleges and universities, informing them about our safe sexiness. It's something we've been doing since the beginning of our campus speaking career back in 2000. The hope is that the schools like it enough to check out the website, or write for more information and, of course, eventually have us on campus to speak to students. Here's the one we just sent for the Spring 2009 semester. As it stands, we have extra postcards around from previous mailings, which makes for confusing Christmas card mailings to friends and family. "Merry…

How does the joke go? When God gives you AIDS, take lemon shots? Well, God may not have given me AIDS, but he sure saddled me down with whatever gunk is going around. The coughing, the just feeling blah. In an effort to turn the tide today, I did three lemon shots. What sucks about the timing is that I've had trouble writing this week. After a couple of days of trying, I found that my body needed to just chill out, and my mind was starting to turn on me a bit. So, instead of screwing up things, I figured I'd kick back and give myself the best chance of getting better. What's good about the…

    13 Nov 2008 | 1:24 am
Connecticut has determined that gay marriage is legal, squarely kicking Proposition H8 in the ol' wedding favors. The other night I was watching Countdown With Keith Olbermann. On November 10, his Special Comment, the rant that ends his show as masterfully lampooned by Ben Affleck on Saturday Night Live, was about Proposition 8. I couldn't write it better than he says it here. The odds of me living a full life are great. It was the gay community that fought to have the AIDS issue brought into the light in the 1980's, to make sure treatments were being developed so more friends wouldn't have…

“More than 40 young children have been infected with HIV at a hospital in Uzbekistan, officials have said” (BBC News: Uzbek children in ‘Aids outbreak’, by Martin Vennard). According to UNAIDS data for 2006 (2006 Report on the global AIDS epidemic — A UNAIDS 10th anniversary special edition), the overall prevalence of “HIV” in Uzbekistan was 0.2% (0.1-0.7); in 2007, it was 0.1% (<0.1-0.3; 2008 UNAIDS Report). Wherefrom, one wonders, came the HIV that infected those children? For comparison, the prevalence is reported as 0.6% in North America and 0.3% in Western…

I had concluded my post about this with the words, “Those facts cause me to dread the further ‘news’ and rumors that will be leaking out from those ignorant, panicked, ‘everything is normal’, school administrators and health officials in St. Louis.” The foreboding was warranted: “November 9, 2008 — H.I.V. Scare Unnerves a St. Louis High School — By MALCOLM GAY ST. LOUIS — Walking the halls of Normandy High School between classes, Mya McLemore, a senior, pays close attention these days to the faces of her fellow students. She keeps an eye out for those who avert…

Years ago, I found instructive — and have remembered ever since — the distinction Paul Halmos makes between misleading and lying: “There is a difference between misleading statements and false ones; striving for ‘the clear reception of the message’ you are sometimes allowed to lie a little, but you must never mislead….. A part of the art of lecturing is to know when and how to lie. Don’t insist on protecting yourself by being cowardly legalistic, but lead the audience to the truth” (I Want to Be a Mathematician, 1985, pp. 113 14; for further applications, see To Rise…

“Everyone knows” that HIV causes AIDS and that HIV is spread by sex and infected needles. No further thought is then needed to explain facts and propose public policies. For example, in Ghana, the cultural practice of marrying one’s brother’s widow is indicted without further ado for the alleged spread of HIV/AIDS: “Widowhood inheritance, . . . a cultural practice in the Upper West Region that allows brothers of a deceased to marry his widow after the funeral rites of the deceased, is said to be one of the major causes of the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Jirapa and Lambussie districts.

I’ve used the Internet pretty much from its inception, at first chiefly for e-mail, of course. I tried a few on-line lists, groups, discussions on various topics pertinent to my academic interests — for example, fraud in science — or on my hobbies — Loch Ness monsters, say. These were open to all who wanted to participate, and participants were open about their identity; electronic communication was just adding some speed and convenience to exchanges that we’d been engaged in via letters, conferences, phone calls. Some of the discussion groups touched on fairly…

Around 3 in the afternoon yesterday, a friend of mine whom I met from G4M last year sent me this text message:   “I’m hiv+. I know you’re working for HIV-AIDS. Can you help me? I know I need to know more about it.” His message crushed my heart. It was like thousands of pins and needles piercing my heart all at once. He was only 25, and both he and his partner have it. What’s more is that he both has the HIV1 and HIV2 viruses. I was devastated. I know I am advocating for HIV-AIDS prevention for two years now, and even working for a country program to stop the…

FACTS ABOUT HIV & AIDS What is HIV? Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV is a virus that attacks the part of the body that fights diseases and protects us from getting sick (immune system). With a weak immune system, a person with HIV can easily catch other germs. Their body can’t fight the germs and they can get very sick (this is called AIDS). HIV cannot be cured. Once someone has HIV it stays in their body for life. What is AIDS? Acquired (something you get) Immune Deficiency (weak, no protection from diseases) Syndrome (different symptoms, signs and illnesses) AIDS is not a disease, but…

The e-mail from my aide in Cherangany was as simple as it was heavy. My friend Judah had died, it said. His young widow and child were downcast with sorrow it added. Judah’s mum, also a widow, was in great sorrow too. A cellphone number I had come to call often before was provided once again, with a request that I find time to talk to the widow. Tomorrow, much of my civic ward - comprising such villages as Marura, Chebarus, Orombee, Maili Nane and Sibanga - will burry Judah. In my attempt for parliament last year, Judah had come out strongly for me, before wavering a little later on.
  • Scientists Discover Possibility Of Revitalizing Immune Cells Of HIV Patients

    11 Nov 2008 | 11:11 pm
Scientists in Canada and the US have discovered a method that apparently restores vitality to certain immune system cells that have become “exhausted” from fighting HIV, thus potentially restoring the ability of the infected person’s own immune system to wage war against the virus. The study was led by Dr Mario Ostrowski, who is based at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto in Canada , and Dr Douglas Nixon, from the Division of Experimental Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, USA, and is published in the 10th November issue of the Journal…
