Periodicals Proposed for Cancellation - Fall 2008

General — Posted by Kay Benjamin @ 14:09

Library Deselection Recommendations

The library thanks everyone who helped with the de-selection review of library materials in the spring. We are again asking for your help.
At this time, we are re-examining our periodical subscriptions because:
  • Periodical subscriptions have been increasing at a rate much higher than the CPI; in recent years the annual rate has ranged between 8% and 10%.
  •  By next year, if inflation continues at these rates, we will be paying about $100,000 more than we paid four years ago for periodical subscriptions.
  • Our periodicals budget hasn’t grow by 8% to 10% each year  in the past, and in the current budget climate I don’t expect it will in the next few years. If we don’t take steps to decrease the amount spent on subscriptions, we will have less and less each year in our budget to invest on books and electronic resources.

Despite this reality, we want to be sure that the subscriptions we continue to receive meet the needs of our students and faculty, and best support the curriculum. To that end, over the summer librarians reviewed all periodical subscriptions. They used a variety of criteria, including recorded use, availability in online format, relation to curriculum, recommendations in academic library periodical core lists, and price, to prepare a draft list of titles to consider dropping in this fiscal year.
The library now seeks faculty input on this list of proposed cancellations. To participate in the review of these titles, you will need to enter your Oneonta username and password. For each title under consideration, there is a link to “send email” so that you can provide the librarians with your thoughts about whether or not the subscription should be dropped beginning in 2009.

Periodicals Proposed for Cancellation—Fall 2008

We know this is a busy and demanding time for faculty, but we really need your assistance with this process. Cancellation decisions must be done in the next few weeks in order to produce savings in this fiscal year. We appreciate your input as we move forward with these important decisions.
Andrea Gerberg (e-mail gerberaf@oneonta.edu) is the contact librarian for this project. Please send your input about any of the currently proposed titles by October 3, 2008. Thanks.

Ask a Librarian - Government Information Online

General — Posted by Kay Benjamin @ 13:47

For many years, Milne Librarians have been answering questions via email at libref@oneonta.edu.

Now the federal government has introduced a similar service. Government Information Online - Ask a Librarian. According to the GIO websie, "You can ask government information librarians who are experts at finding information from government agencies of all levels (local, state, regional, national international) on almost any subject from aardvarks to zygomycosis." The URL is http://govtinfo.org/.

You can chose to ask your question via live chat and communicate interactively with a librarian Monday through Thursday, 8am to 6pm, Friday 8am to 5pm (U.S. Central Standard Time). Or you can select email and get a response within 48 hours. The latter would be appropriate for more involved questions.

The librarians who answer questions at this website are all specialists in government resources from a number of major universities in the United States. The best types of questions to ask of this government service would be things related to the federal government: information on the war in Iraq, statistics on education or the economy, contact information for various offices of the government, etc.

For help with most of your research or information questions, you'll still get the best service right here at the Milne Library Reference & Information Desk. There's an online form where you can easily submit your questions to us at http://www.oneonta.edu/library/reference/ask.asp. Or you can call for help at 436-2722. Milne Library also has a government documents librarian: Kay Benjamin at benjamkd@oneonta.edu or 436-2791
