Susan Goldberg, executive editor and vice president of the San Jose Mercury News, will become the editor of The Plain Dealer effective May 29th.
Goldberg, 47, has led the Mercury News for the past four years, and has been a journalist for more than 25 years at major newspapers nationwide. She will succeed Doug Clifton, who announced his retirement and will leave The Plain Dealer on May 15.
Goldberg becomes the first female editor of The Plain Dealer.
"Susan is one of the great leaders and journalistic talents in our industry and we are thrilled she will be joining us," Egger said. "She is smart, full of energy, realistic and very excited about the rapidly changing world of journalism we live in today. The Plain Dealer and the people in the community we serve deserve the very best. Doug Clifton and our newsroom team set a high standard here and our goal in the search process was to be sure that, in the end, we appointed one of the top editors in America...and we have done just that."
Goldberg is a native of Ann Arbor and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Michigan State University.
During her career, in addition to the Mercury News, she has also served in a variety of managerial, editor and reporter positions at USA Today, The Detroit Free Press and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Sue, if you are a democrat...the PD will follow you off the cliff. I hope you are a Republican...the PD could use ONE.
A member of the gentle sex, from the People's Republic of California...sounds like somebody to give the PD even more of what's ailing it. Oh well, San Jose got our failed arts organizations; we'd might as well get something back.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Another left wing rag heads further into oblivion.
Welcome to a talented woman who has an experienced view of both our country and the news! I give her credit for bravery, growing up in U of M's home of Ann Arbor and choosing in-state rival MSU for her journalism degree, and now making a career move here, to the home state of OSU. This lady definitely does not shy from controversy, and she should bring a welcome zing to the pages of the PD.
Welcome to Cleveland, Ms. Goldberg!
It is clear that you have some vision of where The Plain Dealer can be made more important in our lives. I say this because of these words from your San Jose State Journalism School convocation address in December:
Our truest and strongest value now and into the future will not just be to tell readers what happened, but what it means. Not just to react, but to interpret, to explain, to analyze. We should not shy from telling people why they should care, or be afraid to connect them emotionally to our stories.
And nothing we do will be more important to our communities than our commitment to aggressive, ethical, independent reporting - to seek the truth and to print it.
No whiz-bang computer graphic or navel-gazing blog is going to take the place of gathering, packaging and disseminating information on the events of the day - information that is accurate, fair and revelatory. Information that can shine a light on injustice, explore a societal trend or simply get people to think about momentous and small occurrences in new ways.
The opportunities to improve the PD's utility are boundless. With you in the Editor's chair, my hopes for that growth are buoyed up a great deal.
A sincere welcome to Cleveland with the hope you will revitalize the old city, the mother of us all. There is much vaue here. Case Western Reserve is on the same level as Harvard or Yale. Our orchestra and art museum are first rate. As an old staff writer from the 1960s I cheer your appointment and hope you have a thick skin. There is a lot here beside crime and race and sex sex sex of various kinds. Look to our industry for the real Cleveland, in inventors, and the patents being granted. Our colleges and universities are full of news and students of all ages seeking to improve their lives. Congratulations and much success. FAITH CORRIGAN
I wish her the best and hope she brings California to Cleveland as much as possible!
Cleveland, you are lucky to have her. Treat her with the respect & intelligence she deserves. Congratulations, from a sad SJ Merc News reporter.
She'll be a success if she forgets Dennis "the menace" as far as I'm concerned.
Ask her if she's a member of the CFR-Council on Foreign Relations? If she is, then that will tell you something about her agenda.
Ask he if she is a member of the CFR(Council on Foreign Relations). If she is, that will tell you a lot about her agenda.
Hopefully we will see some huge improvements to the online edition for those of us outside of delivery areas..
Mr. Clifton you WILL be missed. You and Mr. O'Hara have together made this paper a much better publication over the years. Mr. O'Hara is an amazing man and will be helping keep the paper together.
It seems as if the Plain Dealer is continuing to operate the Paper along Racial Lines in a City that's 50% African American, and more that half Racial Minorities. Such an appointment could be expected.
