Art Bank

Art Bank is the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities' movable collection of works purchased from local artists. Artwork is loaned to District Government agencies for display in reception areas, conference rooms, and the offices of Cabinet-level officials. The program creates financial opportunities for local artists and displays their efforts to the public.

The Art Bank includes over 1600 pieces including work by area artists, including Lois Mailou Jones, John Dreyfus, James Wells, and Sam Gilliam.

A segment of the Art Bank is devoted to works that visually document life in contemporary Washington, with a specific focus on local culture rather than federal aspects of the city. Subjects include specific neighborhoods, parks and circles, festivals, gathering places, cultural events, downtown redevelopment, restaurants, shops, workplaces, and Metro stations.

Art Bank works are acquired through an annual call for entries. The Commission also periodically calls for photographs and works by children.

To join the public art mailing list, which includes Art Bank calls for entries, call (202) 724-5613.
