This Wetland Restoration and Creation Site Database includes sites in the 20 coastal counties of North Carolina. It includes restored and created wetlands and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) or "sea grass beds" constructed for compensatory mitigation, shoreline stabilization, mitigation banking, and research. The database includes the following information about each site:
general location;
ownership information (public or private);
size in acres of the total site;
size in acres of area restored or created;
river basin;
an indication of whether the site is considered successful;
the hydrologic unit in which the site is located;
the year the site was planted;
a photo of the site (this will be updated as photos become available).
The site location information included in this web page is limited to the hydrologic unit code and the county. For many reasons, including liability issues, vandalism concerns, and trespassing on private property (some of these sites are privately owned), we are not able to distribute specific information about the locations of these properties. For more information about these sites, contact the Division of Coastal Management.
When you go to the restoration and creation site page, you will first see a map of the 20 coastal counties.
You can click a county on the map or select a particular county from the list box to zoom to that location.
Once you've zoomed in to a particular area, you can zoom or pan around the map, or use the identify or search features.
The identify feature will allow you to click on a particular restoration and creation site to see more detailed information about that site.
All of the restoration and creation sites here are in DCM's GIS database. Both the location and attribute information were collected by DCM using GPS receivers.
