- Rocknrolla (image © Warner Bros Inc. 2008) Rocknrolla: MSN Review
During the release of Snatch back in 2000, Guy Ritchie was riding the crest of a wave. Not only had he just married the Queen of Pop, he was himself being proclaimed the new king of British cinema.
- Step Brothers (image © Sony Pictures) Step Brothers: MSN Review
It would be overly harsh to say that Will Ferrell’s films have been headed downhill since Anchorman. Despite upturned critical noses, Talladega Nights, Blades Of Glory and Semi-Pro all had standout moments enough to remind us that Ferrell is still top of the pile when it comes to improvised comedy. But they felt like factory floor chuckle products, each relying too heavily on Ferrell’s funny bones and lacking any real impact. Step Brothers is undoubtedly an improvement. But it’ll ultimately be lumped in with the same crowd.
- Get Smart (image © Warner Bros. Pictures) Get Smart - MSN Review
Because nothing that existed in history – and particularly pop culture – is safe from the remake machine these days, it was only a matter of time before Mel Brooks and Buck Henry’s ‘60s TV spy spoof Get Smart was going to get the big screen treatment. People have tried several times before to recapture the Smart spark, to usually dire effect.
- Hellboy II: The Golden Army (image © Universal Pictures) Hellboy II: The Golden Army - MSN Review
Back in 2004, Guillermo del Toro brought one of his favourite comic book characters – Mike Mignola’s Hellboy – to the screen for the first time. We were introduced to “big red” (a gruff, perfectly-cast Ron Perlman) as a demon with a huge, stone right hand who was summoned by Nazi occultists through a portal to destroy the world, but ended up adopted by John Hurt’s kindly prof and raised as a hero for humanity.
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars - MSN Review (image © Lucasarts/Warner Bros Inc.)
Thought you’d seen the last of Star Wars? Think again. Three years on from Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi et al are back for another spectacular adventure in a galaxy far, far away.
- You Don't Mess With The Zohan (Image c Happy Madison Productions) You Don’t Mess With The Zohan: MSN Review
You Don't Mess With The Zohan is not as bad as Adam Sandler's fellow ex-Saturday Night Live cast member Mike Myers' The Love Guru, but it's a mere shampoo and blow dry away.
- The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (image © Universal Pictures) The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor - MSN Review
Because calling it The Mummy 3 would have been just too easy? Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull might have been a dafter title, but this threesequel to 1999’s surprise romper The Mummy is easily the dumbest action-adventure of the year. Which, for a popcorn-pushing blockbuster, isn’t a massive problem. And with an avalanche of CG effects, a skeleton army and a pair of Yetis (seriously), Curse Of The Dragon Emperor is the biggest movie in the series. So why isn’t it any fun?
- The Love Guru (Image c Michael De Luca Productions) The Love Guru: MSN Review
Mike Myers may have just been named the third highest earning actor in Hollywood. But is he really earning his sky-high paycheque with his latest comedy? Urrrr... no.
- The X-Files (image © Universal Pictures) The X-Files: I Want To Believe - MSN Review
Prior to this, the second X-Files movie, supernatural investigators Mulder and Scully have had a child, fallen in love and recovered from terminal illnesses besides encountering all manner of otherworldly phenomena. As much as we want to believe, it’s hard not to suspect that the series has already run its course. They don’t even work for the FBI anymore.
- The Dark Knight (Warner Bros Inc 2008) The Dark Knight: MSN Review
This will be almost impossible to follow. Having re-established Batman in 2005, Christopher Nolan has given him his seminal moment. To call The Dark Knight the greatest comic book movie of all time would not be an overstatement. In fact, you’d probably be selling it short.
