Dick Durbin said Friday he will recommend another term for corruption-busting federal prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald if he wants to stay on as Chicago's U.S. attorney. Durbin told a news conference that he first wants to sit down with the city's top federal prosecutor and ask him what he wants in the future. Asked if he would recommend that President-elect Barack Obama renominate Fitzgerald, Durbin said: "Yes." "I think he has done an extraordinary job as U.S. attorney; I have the greatest confidence in him," Durbin said. "I want to do what he wants to do, I want to support what he wants to do and I won't presume what that is." Fitzgerald has aggressively prosecuted state and city officials for corruption. The previous governor, George Ryan, is currently serving a 6 1/2-year term for racketeering, and Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration is under investigation. There has been speculation that some Illinois officials would like to see Fitzgerald elevated to a high-ranking Justice Department job or some other distant post, far from the hands-on investigations of corruption in this city and state. Fitzgerald, a New Yorker, became U.S. attorney in Chicago in September 2001. The job of U.S. attorney, like U.S. district judgeships, most often goes to the person recommended by the senior senator of the president's party - Durbin, in the case of the incoming president. Durbin also spoke about the economy, ripping into auto industry leaders and calling them out of touch with ordinary people. But he indicated there's still a chance for the industry to get a $25 billion bailout. He said the automaker CEOs failed to make the right impression this week when they visited Washington to seek the bailout. He wasn't specific, but the executives were shown on television arriving by corporate jet. "Some of the questions about their own lifestyles and their own compensation really showed the wide chasm between families that are suffering with the loss of savings, workers who are losing their jobs and corporate officials," Durbin said. But Durbin indicated that Detroit might still get its bailout if the companies can make the case that it would dig them out of their current financial woes. On another matter, Durbin said he had tried to talk with Blagojevich about who should fill the Senate seat already vacated by Obama but hadn't heard back from the governor. He said Blagojevich should make filling the seat a high priority because seniority on Capitol Hill is at stake. If the new senator is sworn in now, he or she will have seniority over a handful of other Democrats who will take the oath of office in January. A yelp and a crash broke the early-morning silence and led my husband to discover our upstairs neighbor unconscious in the garden. She'd fallen through the railing of the back stairs landing to the concrete below. Horrible doesn't begin to capture the scene and her death several days later tore at my soul. The loss her family must have felt and still be feeling is simply unimaginable. Life is so tenuous, hanging by a gossamer thread. You're here and then you're gone. The day of the accident, after the paramedics, police and village inspectors had left, I walked out the front door (so as not to walk by the spot where she'd fallen), walked around the block to our garage, and got in my car to drive to the bank. In hindsight, I'm certain I was in shock. Shaken. Utterly broken. I turned on the radio dial to Chicago's WXRT as I drove and heard a familiar voice singing. It was Joan Osborne, live in the studio, singing a song from her new album, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Little-Wild-One-Joan-Osborne/dp/B001C0NMXO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1227289748&sr=8-1">"Little Wild One."</a> The song she performed when I tuned in was called "Hallelujah in the City." As I listened in stunned silence, I heard Joan sing: In this crowded city, I was so alone Stranger to my own eyes Heart without a home Hallelujah. I pulled the car over and wept. Sometimes you hear precisely what your heart of hearts needs to hear in the way it needs to hear it at precisely the moment it needs to be heard. When I regained temporary composure, I forgot all about the bank and drove straight to my neighborhood record shop, Val's Halla in Oak Park, to find "Little Wild One." There behind the register, where I've found her nearly every time I've walked through the door of her shop for 20 years, was Val Camilletti. Greeting me with her big Cheshire cat smile and a friendly hello, she fished out Joan's new CD from one of her many bins and we chatted for a while, catching up on village and political gossip. I didn't tell her what had happened in the garden that morning. I just rested in her neighborly company and kindness. When I left 30 minutes later, I popped "Little Wild One" in the disc player and drove around for a while, thinking, praying, trying to breathe. But as I listened to the words of "Cathedrals," I thought about where my home actually is -- in this world and beyond. It is not a place, but a person. The city I live in is not a geographic location, but a community of friends that abides, no matter the circumstances, lovingly and patiently waiting for me to catch my breath. I turned the car west and drove back to my home -- my husband -- who as waiting for me to hold him. Music has a way of moving my spirit like nothing else. It's a companion in good times and bad, in joy and in deep, unthinkable sorrow. That terribly sad day, my soul was buoyed not only by Val's warm spirit but by Joan's as well. If anyone had asked that day, I wouldn't have been able to articulate what kind of solace I needed. But it was there. These two remarkable women -- one I've known for years, the other I've "known" through her music alone -- met me where I was, holding space with open arms and hearts. It reminds me of something one of my favorite authors -- Frederick Buechner -- once said, "It is no wonder that just the touch of another human being at a dark time can be enough to save the day." If you haven't heard "Little Wild One" yet, please stop what you're doing and go get it, preferably from your local independent music shop. Play it while you're making Thanksgiving dinner. Stuff it in the Christmas stocking of someone you can't live without. Best known for her hit single in the 90s, "What if God Was One of Us," Joan's music defies category. She has toured with the Grateful Dead (her cover of their classic, "Brokedown Palace" is glorious) and the Dixie Chicks; she performs her own music as often as she does cover tunes. The thread that runs through all of her music, whatever the genre, is a spiritual depth that is unmatched. "Little Wild One" is her ode to post-9/11 New York City, the global village where Joan, a Kentucky native, has lived for more than two decades. Many of the songs, which range thematically from the sacred to the sublime -- the woman can write a love song like no other -- are about New York, but they could be about anywhere, any city, any community of friends. I think that's what touched me so deeply about this magnificent album. The penultimate song on the album, "Light of this World," sums her ode to community with ethereal eloquence. Someone suggested he get the mayo and mustard mix on his corned beef, and he said he would. Asked by reporter what he ordered, Obama said, "we got the corned beef." That person will fulfill Barack Obama's term for the next two years. Many names have been suggested and the announcement could come any day. Jesse Jackson Jr. is the best candidate for the seat. He has served in Congress for 13 years and has become a seasoned, accomplished legislator. He has experience on the House Appropriations Committee, which funds virtually all domestic and international programs. Jackson has significant insight into world affairs. Voting is important to Congressman Jackson and he has one of the best voting records in Congress. In 13 years, he has missed voting only twice. President-elect Obama could use Jackson's Washington talents. He is a coalition builder with a broad base of support including Democrats and Republicans, blue and white collar laborers, blacks, whites and Hispanics and the young and old. He is the co-author of the book, A More Perfect Union: Advancing New American Rights, that defines his political doctrine and he served on Obama's executive campaign team. Should Jackson be appointed, he would be the youngest member of the Senate. He is a progressive leader and has received cheers from environmentalists, human rights groups, educators, health care providers, anti-war activists and women's groups. His mindset is right. His background is ripe for the time. He is a part of the changing of the generational guard and is in line with Obama's message of change. He is a popular congressman ready for the Senate at this important time in history. If appointed, Jackson would be the only black in the United States Senate, as were Carol Moseley Braun and Barack Obama. It is important that the seat remain occupied by an African-American. Another person being widely discussed for the post is the newly retired president of the Illinois Senate, Emil Jones, who has had an illustrious career in Illinois politics. He is often referenced as "The Godfather" to Barack Obama, for his advocacy of Obama's State Senate candidacy, which ultimately gave rise to his presidency. If Jones wants the seat, he will probably get it. It would be next to impossible for the governor to say "no" and for Obama not to give the nod. But it would be wonderful if President Obama appointed Jones to an ambassadorship instead. The Chicago Sun Times suggested Frank Clark of ComEd. Clark is one of the best corporate executives in Chicago and he should remain at the helm of the corporation and as an energy advisor to the president. Many stand the opportunity to join their fellow Illinoisans in Washington at the federal level. Obama's giant step has the potential to open many doors. Congressman Danny K. Davis has shown interest in Obama's Senate seat, but he could also serve in the area of Human Services. Arne Duncan could be the Secretary of Education and doctors Eric Whitaker, Terry Mason or David Schneider would be excellent choices for Surgeon General. State Senators Donne E. Trotter and James Meeks and Aldermen Sandi Jackson, Leslie Hairston and Willie Cochran would all make great congressmen. Tammy Duckworth would be an excellent replacement for Congressman Rahm Emanuel, who is leaving his congressional seat to become the chief of staff in the Obama Administration. As would Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool, though he's said he will not run. The election of President Obama will bring many into the ranks of public service, just as it was under President Kennedy.
