  • Report: New Xbox Experience Netflix Streaming Loses Sony-owned Movies

    18 Nov 2008 | 5:00 pm
Those anxious to try out Netflix movie streaming in the New Xbox Experience have just hit a stumbling block: a preview user has reported that streaming movies from Columbia Pictures--a Sony subsidiary--are unable to be played on the Xbox 360. A Joystiq reader noticed that their Instant Queue--the web-based list required to watch Netflix movies on the 360--suddenly included a slew of titles that showed "Not Available on Xbox" in red print where future release dates or other warnings are typically found. The...

  • Namco Bandai Profit Drops 92% in Quarter Results

    18 Nov 2008 | 4:30 pm
Namco Bandai just wrapped up its fiscal Q2 2009, and the results were nothing short of bad: the games division lost 4.4 billion yen ($45.5 million) from last year dropped to 337 million yen ($3.4 million), making for a 92% year-over-year drop. The publisher saw the bulk of its sales on the PlayStation 2, according to numbers appearing on GamesIndustry. The platform was responsible for 2.4 million Namco game sales while the new Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit (360, PS3) managed to break 700,000 copies sold. Nintendo DS games also accounted for 1.5 million units in sales.
  • Unreal Engine 3 Fingered in Midway's Struggles

    18 Nov 2008 | 3:51 pm
A number of ex-Midway employees, when asked about the publisher's downward spiral, had a variety of answers, but almost all of them mentioned Unreal Engine 3, the technology licensed from Epic Games that powers Gears of War. "One issue popped up again and again: Midway's decision to license Unreal Engine and use it for ALL its games," wrote Variety's Ben Fritz of his interviews with former Midway staffers. Epic's Gears of War 2, built on Unreal En...
  • A Guide to the New Xbox Experience

    18 Nov 2008 | 2:44 pm
Come tomorrow, a New Xbox Experience will dawn for Xbox 360 owners. More than just a simple dashboard update, the free download brings an entirely new look and feel to the system's interface, adding a number of new features in the process. After using the NXE for over a week now, I can confidently state it's an improvement, even though I never had a problem with the old interface. I have a few quibbles, but for the most part, I really like it. Heck, I even like my Avatar and his slick aviator sunglasses. Interface The most obvious change is the new interface, which replaces the old 2D blades…

    11 Nov 2008 | 11:36 am
Christmas arrived early this year for Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy with Viacom playing Old St. Nick and giving the Guitar Hero and Rock Band creators $150 million bonuses. Rigopulos and Egozy sold their company to the media conglomerate for an estimated $175 million in 2006 and inked an earnout agreement in the deal that guaranteed the duo a set of hefty bonuses if Rock Band sold successfully. Imagine Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone with a jiggly ho-ho-ho belly and an armored truck wrapped in a big red bow!
  • Evan Rachel Wood Dumps Marilyn Manson

    Fashion Plate
    5 Nov 2008 | 2:38 pm
Evan Rachel Wood can hopefully put away the dark lipstick and perpetual pout now that she has reportedly dumped live-in boyfriend and creepy washed-up rocker Marilyn Manson. The 21-year-old actress started hooking up with nearly 40-year-old attention whore while his marriage to burlesque star Dita Von Teese began faltering in late 2006. The break-up supposedly came after an argument over Wood’s brother who had moved in with the couple, but no word has emerged if Manson has managed to already snag a barely post-pubescent piece of arm candy.
  • “Grand Theft Auto” Inspires Homicide in Thailand

    5 Aug 2008 | 4:42 pm
A Thai distributor is jerking “Grand Theft Auto” off shelves after an avid 18-year-old player confessed to robbing and murdering a cab driver trying to reenact parts of the game. The perp was caught with the injured driver in the backseat when he tried to steer the cab backwards on a Bangkok street. Police noted no mental abnormalities in the young man and his parents described him as “polite and diligent,” but he could face the death penalty if found guilty of the crime. The Thai government is calling for a crackdown, which would include a ratings system and…
  • Microsoft to Share Cash and Creativity With Users

    29 Jul 2008 | 3:36 pm
Who better to tap for cutting edge gaming ideas than gamers themselves, is Microsoft Corp’s new philosophy for the Xbox 360. Taking a page from the book of Facebook and YouTube, Microsoft will take audience participation one step farther by offering 70% of live service and advertising revenue profits with creators beginning later this year. Aspiring developers will have to pass a peer review of their work and maintain a membership to the XNA Creators Club, but the company foresees a doubling of available games for the system. One company representative commented that, “Not only…

Wipe away that gamer stereotype of the teenage boy in a dark room late at night, and make room for the new (or old) generation of gamers. According to a study by the Entertainment Software Association, almost a quarter of the playing public is from the pre-Pac Man generation (over 50’s), and one-third of women are enjoying America’s new favorite family pastime. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are all releasing family friendly games that emphasize the group experience and include everything from conducting a full orchestra to creating a universe complete with characters. • Mobile Games Market Has 'Flatlined' - Experts [Mobile]

    Stuart Houghton
    18 Nov 2008 | 4:20 pm
Now hang on a minute. It doesn't seem like five minutes since some gaggle of market pundits were proclaiming that the iPhone had turned the mobile games market inside out and pointing at developers rolling around in pits of cash like Scrooge McDuck. Well, that's all well and good, but a different gaggle of experts (Juniper Research, this time) are casting worried glances at the non-iPhone end of the market. Apparently Java game development has "flatlined across North America and Western Europe," although the quoted jump from $5.4 billion in 2008 to more than $10 billion by 2013 doesn't sound…

  • The Kids In The Hall Think Portal Is HILARIOUS [Clips]

    18 Nov 2008 | 3:40 pm
We're not sure how deep into the goof juice the Kids in the Hall were when troupe funnyman Scott Thompson started sulking and playing Portal in the back of the tour bus, but something got into Kids during this sad little gaming session. Yes, the comedic stylings of Valve writer Erik Wolpaw are most amusing, as is the struggle of watching Thompson attempt to do anything more than move a cube — uncrouch already! — but something tells me there's something magical in those cups. Thanks for the tip, Sascha23!

Are we done with Tenacious D yet? That one album was quite funny (who doesn't love a Dio joke?) and the videos are pretty good whenever Dave Grohl shows up. That movie got made, also. Fans of movie comedy guy Jack Black and acting and music guy Kyle Gass can try to prolong the magic by singing, strumming and thwacking along with the Tenacious Twosome on Xbox LIVE this Thursday. JB & KG will be appearing on LIVE to promote their new DVD The Complete Masterworks 2. • Xbox 360 Gets Its First Wii Channel [NXE Branded Experiences]

    18 Nov 2008 | 3:00 pm
It looks like the New Xbox Experience will be going live tomorrow with its first... Wii Channel? Sure it may not have the grid-like precision of its Nintendo counter-part, or the obsessive content (yet), but the first thing I thought of when I laid my eyes on Capcom's "branded experience" for Super Street Fighter II Turbe HD Remix, was Nintendo's Wii Channels. The Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix "destination experience" looks to be a hang-out spot, a "channel" if you will, for fans of the game on the Xbox 360. The "channel" will feature updates about new content, new trailers, and…

Gameloft has provided a gameplay video for their new Uno title we reported the other day. Overall, the iPhone version of Uno is relatively well implemented, but one of its most compelling features is Online Multi-player play. This means that aside from playing over local Wi-Fi, you can reach out to play others on the internet. (Because, let’s be realistic, how many of you are sitting out there playing iPhone games with others in the same room.) There were no players available when we tested this on the first day of its release, but just today were able to play a few games with some…

Or perhaps this issue has to do with the fact that Columbia Pictures is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is a subsidiary of Microsoft rival Sony. Enough said. Source

A combination of new opportunities and old-fashioned burnout seems to be driving the change:Even Green Lantern needs to recharge his ring now and again. We had enjoyed dramatic expansion over the past few years, but with it has come…

Police in Winnipeg believe that a quartet of youthful offenders were acting out in video game-like fashion by stealing cars and fleeing from pursuing officers.CBC reports on comments by Sgt. Doug Safioles:They all play the game, they talk about the game, they tell their probation officers it's a game. It's a huge rush. They taunt the police on purpose to engage in chases.Safioles, who did not link the teens to a specific game, made similar comments in May. At that time, however, a youth advocate linked the crimes to the region's high level of poverty.Meanwhile, in Australia, the Daily…

  • Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World Review

    18 Nov 2008 | 5:10 pm
Don't be ashamed to admit that you find the recent deluge of Tales titles a tad daunting -- even dedicated disciples of Namco Bandai's prolific role-playing franchise occasionally have a tough time keeping all of its myriad subseries, spin-offs, sequels, and remakes straight. Some, such as the recent Xbox 360 offering Tales of Vesperia, deliver fresh, newbie-friendly thrills, but Wii-exclusive Dawn of the New World comes off as more of a for-fans-only dalliance. As a direct continuation of 2004's GameCube hit Tales of Symphonia, Dawn picks up precisely two years after its predecessor's…

But that's OK, because thanks to some clever (albeit sometimes way over-the-top) writing and solid-enough strategy, the game manages to both surprisingly entertain and shed the shackles of its predecessor, a dull Final Fantasy…

Two key things will undoubtedly run through your mind as you play Valve's first-person survivors-versus-zombies shooter Left 4 Dead: the phrase "oh, s***!" repeated ad nauseam in response to a stressful turn of events, and the phrase "goddamn sadistic Director system" after either surviving or failing that stressful turn. The Director system in question is what makes L4D so special, although a lot of things make the game pretty damn good already. Its subtle yet pure focus on co-op play (don't expect dorky gimmick maneuvers like having one guy hold…

Recently somebody pointed out WolfGL for Wolfenstein 3D to me (available in Shareware & Retail versions) and I went on a short but sweet Nazi-killing spree. Amy Taylor met her husband David Pollard in a chatroom and married him in both Second Life and the real world. They had been together 3 years when she discovered his avatar having sex with other ones. She had even gone so far as hiring a virtual detective. When David said he didn’t love her anymore after being caught, Amy filed for divorce the next day. This is proof positive that if you are going to mess around with Internet dating/activities, expect to pay the…

We hope you guys are as ready as we are for this one, as Capcom has finally announced the release date for Street Fighter IV. You’ll be able to pick up your copy for the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 on February 17th here in North America, and February 20th if you are in Europe. We’ve been waiting for this game for the better part of a decade, so you can bet we’re stoked. We also find it mildly amusing that in the announcement, Capcom urges people to pick up Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, which is supposed to be available sometime this month, and yet, has no definitive…

So, we hit you with a 20-minute video tour of the New Xbox Experience, but we’ve received a bunch of feedback where you guys were asking about the installation process of the new dashboard. Thing is, since we had already updated our two Xbox 360 units, we couldn’t go back and show how installation worked, since you can’t go back to the old interface once you’ve upgraded. Luckily, Major Nelson just put up a video showing how installation of the NXE works. Check it out above - as you’ll see, it’s all painless. November 19th is just five days away. Tags: (T),…

  • IGG Releases New Wonderland Online Client and Patch

    Shawn Sines

IGG’s Wonderland Online has a new available and a patch to go with it. When I picture Wonderland in my mind’s eye I’m thinking cats, tea and giant mushrooms. Wonderland Online is none of these things. The fantastical setting features the Mayan and other South American cultures with elements of the Pacific islands with the Easter Island statues thrown in for good measure. Taking a second look the new screenshot above, I could be mistaken about the cats. The game has catgirls at the very least. You can find the latest screenshots, the Wonderland Online v3.0.0 client and the…
