Also, don't worry too much about me, I'm used to the traffic and I was using my little compact camera which has a 3" screen, so I just held it about chest high. :P http://joeinjapan.com/2008/11/17/the-ride-to-school/#comment-217 kevin Mon, 17 Nov 2008 08:19:57 +0000 http://joeinjapan.com/?p=123#comment-217 I was literally on the edge of my seat - imagining you riding with one hand on the wheel and the other on your camera pressed up against your eye as you cruised through the intersections! Especially at 1:50 when the taxi came to a screeching halt. I thought that at around 3:50 (I think) you should have turned on the "Hey, I am a gaijin who can speak some Japanese" charm and nanpad those two girls. Also, you were huffing and puffing quite a bit at the end there. Maybe you need some more exercise? ;P ;P http://joeinjapan.com/2008/11/02/my-progress-in-japanese-halfway-through-the-year/#comment-204 Joseph tame Sun, 02 Nov 2008 10:17:32 +0000 http://joeinjapan.com/?p=116#comment-204 great to read about the progress you've made! I'm not really that into the martial arts per se, but I really enjoyed my class last semester where we surveyed judo, kendo and aikido. They were all very interesting, but I like the emphasis on tradition and philosophy that is in aikido. Who knows, maybe I will end up practicing one someday! http://joeinjapan.com/2008/04/13/the-start-of-the-school-year/#comment-192 David Harvey Tue, 30 Sep 2008 03:39:07 +0000 http://joeinjapan.com/?p=28#comment-192 Joe, it sounds like you are really getting into the culture over there. I have never made the trip myself, though a bunch of us went over in from Australia in May for an Aikido competition. (I do Shodokan style Aiki.) Which martial art are you looking to get involved in? Do you know yet? http://joeinjapan.com/2008/08/30/a-fresh-start-on-school-life-and-japanese/#comment-169 Trog Sat, 30 Aug 2008 11:23:21 +0000 http://joeinjapan.com/?p=81#comment-169 Good luck Joe, I think you have good insight into yourself with this one. I think the path that you took in your first semester is common to many foreigners in Japan - and the key is to enjoy it for a bit and then move on. I was always sad to see people staying in the same rut months/years later. There is quite a different Japan to experience with greater language competency and moving out of the socialising-with-gaijin-and gaijin-junkies sphere. Enjoy your parents visit too - I will be interested to see how it goes (a couple of parental visits I had were "interesting" to say the least, with parent-child role reversal being the salient feature) http://joeinjapan.com/2008/07/27/a-review-of-the-semesters-classes/#comment-168 YokohamaBogi Tue, 19 Aug 2008 07:07:24 +0000 http://joeinjapan.com/?p=50#comment-168 If you spent 6-12 months at a Japanese language school in Japan, starting from scratch you could be at JLPT 2 level. 12-18 months and you'd be at JLPT 1 level. It really is the best and fastest way to learn Japanese.
