Monopoly set for the big screen

Monopoly is one of the most popular board games worldwide
One toss of the dice determines whether you win second prize in a beauty contest or go straight to jail.

That's how it goes in the classic board game Monopoly, which is set to become a star of the silver screen after a deal agreed with Universal Pictures.

Under the six-year deal, Universal will produce at least four films based on Hasbro's brands, including Monopoly.

The first film will be released in either 2010 or 2011, with one film a year after that, the firms said.

The partnership will include Candy Land, Battleship and Ouija, but not Transformers and GI Joe, which are licensed to Paramount.

No financial terms, or plot details, were released by the companies.

US-based Hasbro, the world's second-largest toy firm, has more than 240 licensees from mobile phone games to footwear.

Universal Studios is part of media conglomerate NBC Universal, which is 80% owned by General Electric.
