Explore Middle East to see what I have posted on this. I am not an expert but I have conscientiously tried to make sense of it where I can.

On Israel and Palestine

As a subset of the category above, try also Israel and Holocaust.

I support neither the abolition of the State of Israel nor most of the policy directions of the Israeli governments of the past two or three decades, including the "settlements".

I believe the US must be much more critical as a "friend"; I also believe that the United Nations must be taken much more seriously in this area.

I am not Jewish, but I find myself in agreement with Independent Australian Jewish Voices.

Yes, I am very old-fashioned. I base this however on fifty years of association, sometimes close, with Jewish people including Israelis. I am neither Islamophobic nor anti-Arab. I equally respect the case of the Palestinians, but reject terror and oppression on BOTH sides. I ask both sides: how many people do you want to kill, for how long, and with what outcome in the end?

I endorse totally this account of the history of the matter by Avi Shlaim of Oxford University: How Israel brought Gaza to the brink of humanitarian catastrophe. It represents the kind of depth of understanding, honesty and compassion that I have experienced in Jewish circles: "I write as someone who served loyally in the Israeli army in the mid-1960s and who has never questioned the legitimacy of the state of Israel within its pre-1967 borders. What I utterly reject is the Zionist colonial project beyond the Green Line. The Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the June 1967 war had very little to do with security and everything to do with territorial expansionism. The aim was to establish Greater Israel through permanent political, economic and military control over the Palestinian territories. And the result has been one of the most prolonged and brutal military occupations of modern times." I notice tonight (7 January) that Obama has promised he will have plenty to say. I hope he does. I hope he has read Shlaim's piece.
