The Heresy of Last Rites

The Heresy of Last Rites!

by David J. Stewart

The following article appeared in the November 24, 2003 Chicago Sun-Times newspaper

Man dies in fall from scaffold at Wabash Ave. building site

November 24, 2003

BY MAUREEN O’DONNELL Staff Reporter

Worshipers at St. James Cathedral were leaving Sunday services when they heard a sound like a car crash.

Cathedral officials ushered them out a side door to help prevent them from seeing what caused the noise: A man had plummeted to his death from scaffolding across the street as the 10:30 a.m. mass was dispersing about noon, authorities said.

The Rev. Ralph Blackman tried to help the man, who had not been identified as of Sunday evening.

“I just grabbed some holy water with me and gave him the last rites,” said Blackman, dean of the Episcopal cathedral at 65 E. Huron. He said two physicians at the service attended the man, but they could not get a pulse.

The man plunged from sixth-floor scaffolding at 672 N. Wabash, said Officer Matt Jackson of Chicago Police News Affairs. Blackman said it is the site of new residential construction.

Wabash was temporarily closed between Erie and Huron, Blackman said.

Police and Blackman said no one was working on the building Sunday and that no foul play was suspected.

I was saddened as I read this article. Here’s a man who suffered a tragic fall and died. Death is sudden for many people, we just never know what will happen next. There was an article in yesterday’s paper about an elderly couple who was killed when high winds blew over a large tree onto their car as they were driving by. Death was sudden for them. The man killed in the article above fell six stories to his death. You could be next. I could be next. There is no guarantee of tomorrow. We do not know whether he was a Christian or not. We do not know whether he is is heaven or not.

Even more sad to me was the fact that so many people have been blinded by the heresy (false teaching) of Last rights. What is Last rights? It is the unbiblical teaching that a minister has the power to forgive a person’s sins on their death bed. It is one of the Seven Sacraments of Catholicism. The “Reverend” Blackman of the church in the article above said:

“I just grabbed some holy water with me and gave him the last rites.”

Of course, there is NO such foolishness taught in the Bible. No priest or minister has the power to forgive anyone’s sins. There is NO SUCH thing as “holy water“! Holy water is a superstition manufactured by the Catholic religion. The Pope has no power to forgive anyone’s sins. Holy water will just get you wet. Those priests are in dyer need of forgiveness themselves! It’s hard to imagine people so blinded by religion that they would actually stoop to confess their sins to another sinful human being (priest, minister,…etc). The Bible teaches that ALL people have sinned (Romans 3:23). The Pope is a sinner himself. Every minister is a sinner. You are a sinner. I am a sinner. There is ONLY one way to get our sins forgiven, through the blood of Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:14). We are taught in the Word of God to confess our sins to God (1st John 1:9).

The teaching of “last rights” (also called “Extreme Unction”) is NOT found in the Scriptures, but prayer for the sick certainly is:

“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.” -James 5:14-15

We are advised in the Scriptures to call for the elders of the church when we are sick. It is the “prayer of faith” which heals the sick. Notice that the Catholics and Lutherans observe the last rights only in death. The Bible speaks of healing, not death. The prayer of faith was intended for physical healing, not to prepare you for death. ONLY a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ by faith can guarantee anyone admission into heaven, all else leads to destruction in hell. You get that personal relationship by admitting to God that you are a dirty-rotten sinners, deserving of hell, and then turning in faith to the Lord Jesus for forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross for you and me, He paid the price for our sins. ONLY Jesus has the scars in His hands and feet, so ONLY Jesus can save us.

EXTREME UNCTION is one of the sacraments of Rome, and as such, is held to “confer grace on the receiver;” it is therefore placed on the same level with the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, Baptism, and Confirmation. Such is its position in the standards of Papal doctrine. The Council of Trent has pronounced its ever-ready anathema on every soul of man who shall deny that it is “truly and properly a sacrament instituted by Christ our Lord,” so that every Papist is shut up to the faith of the dogma on peril of damnation! Let the Protestant reader ponder this! Popery is as profuse in its curses, as it is parsimonious in its blessings; it never blesses but for money, while its curses are dispersed gratuitously! In this case, as usual, it builds upon a single portion of the Word of God, that of James v. 14, 15, which has thus been made instrumental of working a world of misery, and of extorting incalculable treasure from the human family. It is a sight to make an angel weep, to see a creature who has been duped, deceived, and plundered through life, on having reached the end of his journey, and lying on the brink of eternity, attended by the priest, for the purpose of administering the said Extreme Unction! - Dr. Ian Paisley (Read the complete article by clicking on that link)

When my grandmother was in the hospital dying, she was in horrible pain; her leg had just been amputated, then a heart attack, then kidney shutdown, and several other medical problems. There was no doubt that it was soon her time to die. Thankfully, she was a born-again Christian. While she lay dying, a foolish Lutheran minister came to perform last rights on her. Evidently, he didn’t know that once you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour that all your sins are forgiven forever. She didn’t need last rights, she needed to get saved. She did die a week later. I’m confident that she’s in heaven. Hopefully that minister will come to repentance before it’s too late. I’m saddened to realize that so many people are blinded about this thing of last rights. Folks, no one can forgive your sins except Jesus Christ. You had better go to the Lord in prayer and ask Him to forgive your sins and take you to heaven when you die. Relying upon the priest or minister is a sure road to hell-fire. Holy unction (last rights) is of the devil, no minister can help your soul. YOU must do that yourself through Christ Jesus! I would like to quote Dr. Paisley once more:

It is a sight to make an angel weep, to see a creature who has been duped, deceived, and plundered through life, on having reached the end of his journey, and lying on the brink of eternity, attended by the priest, for the purpose of administering the said Extreme Unction!

So many billions of people have gone to hell because of false religion. So many people have placed their soul’s eternal fate into the hands of a heathen priest. By the way, any minister or priest who claims to have the power to forgive sin is an imposter, a phony. Any minister who administers last rights (extreme unction) is an imposter, a counterfeit. Let God be true, but every man a liar (Romans 3:4). Last rights of of the devil, a false teaching not taught in the Scriptures. If you or a loved one is about to die, all that matters is this, “Have you been born-again?”

Have you been born again?

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. -John 3:3

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” -John 3:5

There is NO OTHER WAY TO HEAVEN! You MUST be BORN-AGAIN! You get born-again by having the Spirit of Christ born in you. The physical birth was of water. Now you need the spiritual birth, which is of God’s Spirit. The moment you confess that you are a heathen sinner to God and beg His forgiveness, God comes to live in your heart. God the Father and God the Son move into your heart in the form of God the Holy Spirit (John 14:23).

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” -Revelation 3:20

Is Jesus knocking at your heart’s door? Will you send Him away? No minister can let Jesus in for you, it is a personal decision that you alone MUST make. Every human being makes the decision either to accept or to reject the knowledge of the truth of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, most men and women reject Christ (Matthew 7:14). Although some people are sincerely blinded by Satan (2nd Corinthians 4:4), most people reject Christ because of their love for sin (John 3:20). Where do you stand? It is sad concerning the man who died in the scaffolding accident in the article above. It is even more sad that he more than likely is burning in hell right now. It is most saddening for me to know that foolish and stiff-necked ministers are teaching damnable heresies to the masses, the blind leading the blind, offering false hope to families. For someone to put their faith in last rights or holy water is a sure road to hell. I say “stiff-necked” because they know the truth, but reject it (just like the religious Pharisees of Jesus’ day). The Pharisees were Jesus’ worst enemy, the religious people. Should it be a surprise to us then, that it is religion itself that the devil uses to send billions of unconverted souls to hell? Not at all. Jesus warned the foolish ministers of His day:

“And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” -Mark 7:9

That’s what the Catholic and Lutheran religions are all about…TRADITION. Billions of men and women are burning in hell now because of tradition. Listen friend, you had better OBEY God’s commandments! The Bible is God’s Word, it is your responsibility to yourself to search out the truth. Where will you spend eternity? Jesus wants to save you! Do you want to be saved? Would you like to be saved now? If so, admit your sinful condition to Jesus Christ (God) right now. Believing that Jesus died upon the cross by the shedding of His blood, that He was buried and rose again three days later, tell Him that you are very sorry for your sinful lifestyle. Ask Jesus to forgive you of all your sins. Ask Jesus Christ to take you to heaven when you die. Invite Him into your heart as your new friend and Saviour. Tell Jesus that your going to rely upon Him 100% to save you, apart from ALL else (apart from baptism, apart from church, apart from good works, apart from the priest, apart from the sacraments, apart from everything). Thank Christ for saving you. Don’t make the foolish mistake of calling some imposters to forgive your sins. Don’t rely upon last rights. Don’t trust your church. You call (rely) upon Jesus, He is the ONLY Saviour:

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” -Romans 10:13

  1. >”No priest or minister has the power to forgive anyone’s sins.”

The Bible disagrees with you. Did not Christ delegate His authority to forgive sins to men? “Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them, and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained” (John 20:23). The Bible seems clear on some men being having God’s authority to forgive or retain sins. Now I do agree with you that the forgiveness is ultimately from Christ, through the minister in persona Christi.

    >”Holy water will just get you wet.”

Absolutely. Who told you elsewise? Holy water is a reminder of our baptism and confession of faith.

    >”The Pope is a sinner himself. Every minister is a sinner. You are a sinner. I am a sinner.”

Absolutely. God created a church for sinners, filled it with sinners and put sinners in charge. How cool is that?

    >”once you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour that all your sins are forgiven forever”

Too bad that the Bible doesn’t actually say anywhere that future sins are forgiven. But, I do agree that once past sins are forgiven, they are forever gone, although temporal effects of the sins may linger.

    >”Notice that the Catholics and Lutherans observe the last rights only in death.”

The sacrament is called “Annoiting of the Sick” and for Catholics the sacrament is not observed only in death but for any major illness or surgery. Your quote from James 5:14-15 is an accurate depiction of Annointing of the Sick.

    >”The Bible is God’s Word, it is your responsibility to yourself to search out the truth.”

Absolutely. The Bible in 1Timothy 3:15 told me where to find the pillar and ground of the truth. Unfortunately, 1Timothy 3:15 does not say that you or your blog are the pillar and ground of the truth. I’ll stick to the Bible and 1Timothy 3:15.

    God bless…

  2. Hi Timothy,

“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” —Matthew 16:19

Some people attempt to use this Scripture to teach that a priest or minister can forgive sin. However, this is not what the Bible is teaching at all. Henry H. Halley states in his Halley’s Bible Handbook concerning Matthew 16:19 (”The Keys to the Kingdom”):

“The ordinary interpretation of this is that Peter opened the door of salvation, on the Day of Pentecost, to the Jews (Acts 2), and later to the Gentiles (Acts 10). Not that he was given the power to forgive sins, but to proclaim the terms of forgiveness. Whatever authority it gave to Peter was also given to the other Apostles (Mathew 18:18; John 20:23). And that, only in a declarative sense. Christ forgives. His Apostles were inspired by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the terms of that forgiveness. SOURCE: Halley’s Bible Handbook, by Henry H. Halley, 1965 edition, pg. 442

A similar Scripture that is often misunderstood and misinterpreted is John 20:23

“Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.” —John 20:23

The Greek word for “remit” is “aphiemi” and means “to send away”. According to VINE’S COMPLETE EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY OF OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT WORDS (pg. 522):

“Scripture makes clear that the Lord’s words could not have been intended to bestow the exercise of absolution, which Scripture declares is the prerogative of God alone. There is no instance in the New Testament of this act on the part of the Apostles. The words are to be understood in a declarative sense; the statement has regard to the effects of their ministry of the Gospel, with its twofold effects of remission and retention.

Clearly, neither Matthew 16:19 nor John 20:23 teach that men have the power to forgive sin. Even the unsaved Pharisees knew this: “And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, BUT GOD ALONE?” (Luke 5:21). Yet, Catholic priests and Lutheran ministers today wickedly and arrogantly claim the ability to forgive sin. They cannot. Only God, Who is Christ in the flesh, can forgive sin, “…and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1st John 1:7). “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1st Timothy 2:5).

You say: “Too bad that the Bible doesn’t actually say anywhere that future sins are forgiven.”

I re-quote again 1st John 1:7 “…and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from ALL sin”

You say: “I’ll stick to the Bible and 1Timothy 3:15″.

I really hope that you do because 1st Timothy 3:15 and the rest of the Bible say absolutely NOTHING whatsoever about the Catholic Church. The term “Catholic” is not even mentioned once in the Bible. However, there are a good verse in the Bible about folks like Catholics:

“He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” -Mark 7:6-9

  3. “The teaching of “last rights” (also called “Extreme Unction”) is NOT found in the Scriptures” Please re-read Mark 14:3 - 9.

“Six days before the Passover Jesus was in the home of Simon the leper at Bethany. While he reclined at table, a woman with an alabaster flask of pure and very costly nard perfume entered the room. She broke the alabaster flask and emptied it over his head.
Now some were indignant, saying to one another: “What good is the waste of this perfume: Why, this perfume could have been sold for upwards of three-hundred denarii and the money given to the poor!” So they gave way to bitter feelings toward her.
But Jesus said, “Let her have her way. Why do you molest her? She has given beautiful expression of her devotion to me. After all, you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me. She did what she could: by anointing my body, she prepared it for burial just in time! I assure you, wherever the Gospel is preached, in any part of the world, what this woman has done will likewise be proclaimed to perpetuate her memory.”

I agree that Extreme Unction does not grant you salvation, but it most certainly is in the bible. This is the true meaning of it “by anointing my body, she prepared it for burial”. And extreme unction done right is with oil and water. How this minister did it is not important, the fact that he cared for the man enough to do it, is. No man can forgive your sins because none of them paid the price for them, but the sacraments do have power because they are scriptural and they are God’s grace for our lives.

  4. Sorry I would like to make a correction in what I said. I am not sure why I said oil and water. It is just done with oil. Water would be used at a funeral. I think I was combining the two for some reason. And also its Last Rites not last rights, I misspell that all the time. Thanks.

  5. Hi matt,

The biblical story of the woman who honors Jesus by her expensive oil has absolutely nothing to do with the Last Rite practice.

    1. The biblical story of the devoted woman:

Who is the woman? Just a normal woman who has faith in God.
What is her purpose? To honor (anoint) the Lord Jesus Christ.
Who is Jesus Christ? He is the Almighty God.
Is that a tradition? No, nowhere in the Bible that teaches us to honor the Lord that way. Jesus allows that woman because He knows her heart, however, He never teach that there is some “special” power in that woman’s act.

    2. The Last Rite heresy:

Who is allowed to conduct it? A priest or church official, no normal believer is allowed to conduct it.
What is its purpose? To assure the Salvation of believers. Catholics reject the eternal security teaching of Jesus Christ so they believe that in order to have more chance to get into Heaven, they must have the Lats Rite at the end of their lives.
Who is honored (or anointed)? The believer. The priest conducts the Last Rite on the believer’s body.
Is that a tradition? Yes, it is an important tradition of Catholics.

Based on that brief comparison, you can see clearly that there is no connection between the biblical story of the devoted woman and the Last Rite heresy.

  6. You said: What is her purpose? To honor (anoint) the Lord Jesus Christ.

But Jesus Said: “She did what she could: by anointing my body, she prepared it for burial just in time!”

You said: “Catholics reject the eternal security teaching of Jesus Christ so they believe that in order to have more chance to get into Heaven, they must have the Lats Rite at the end of their lives.”

Please provide Catholic dogma that supports this claim.

You claim last Rites is a heresy. Let me provide you with a personal story. My aunt was on her death bed with cancer. She called a priest/minister (not catholic) in to give her last rites. When he was doing this she confessed her sins (james 5:16) and he also told her about what salvation is. Right there she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior in to her heart. Now tell me again how Last rites is evil?

    Comment by matt — September 22, 2008 @ 4:21 pm

  7. Hi matt,

The quote you provide just prove the point I made in my previous comment, that is the Lord Jesus Christ who was honored (anointed) by that woman’s act.

You ask: “Please provide Catholic dogma that supports this claim.”

Here is full paragraph I take from this website: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05716a.htm Please notice at the end of the paragraph where it describes how Catholics believe Extreme Unction as a sign for special graces.

“The Council of Trent (Sess. XIV, cap. i, De Extr. Unct.) teaches that “this sacred unction of the sick was instituted by Christ Our Lord as a sacrament of the New Testament, truly and properly so called, being insinuated indeed in Mark [vi, 13] but commended to the faithful and promulgated” by James [Ep., v, 14, 15]; and the corresponding canon (can. i, De Extr. Unct.) anathematizes anyone who would say “that extreme unction is not truly and properly a sacrament instituted by Christ Our Lord, and promulgated by the blessed Apostle James, but merely a rite received from the fathers, or a human invention”. Already at the Council of Florence, in the Instruction of Eugene IV for the Armenians (Bull “Exultate Deo”, 22 Nov., 1439), extreme unction is named as the fifth of the Seven Sacraments, and its matter and form, subject, minister, and effects described (Denzinger, “Enchiridion”, 10th ed., Freiburg, 1908, no. 700–old no. 595). Again, it was one of the three sacraments (the others being confirmation and matrimony) which Wycliffites and Hussites were under suspicion of contemning, and about which they were to be specially interrogated at the Council of Constance by order of Martin V (Bull “Inter cunctas”, 22 Feb., 1418.–Denzinger, op. cit., no. 669–old no. 563). Going back farther we find extreme unction enumerated among the sacraments in the profession of faith subscribed for the Greeks by Michael Palæologus at the Council of Lyons in 1274 (Denzinger, no. 465–old no. 388), and in the still earlier profession prescribed for converted Waldenses by Innocent III in 1208 (Denzinger, no. 424–old no. 370). Thus, long before Trent–in fact from the time when the definition of a sacrament in the strict sense had been elaborated by the early Scholastics– extreme unction had been recognized and authoritatively proclaimed as a sacrament; but in Trent for the first time its institution by Christ Himself was defined. Among the older Schoolmen there had been a difference of opinion on this point, some–as Hugh of St. Victor (De Sacram., Bk. II, pt. XV, c. ii), Peter Lombard (Sent., IV, dist. xxiii), St. Bonaventure (Comm. in Sent., loc. cit., art. i, Q. ii), and others–holding against the more common view that this sacrament had been instituted by the Apostles after the Descent of the Holy Ghost and under His inspiration. But since Trent it must be held as a doctrine of Catholic faith that Christ is at least the mediate author of extreme unction, i.e., that it is by His proper authority as God-Man that the prayer-unction has become an efficacious sign of grace; and theologians almost unanimously maintain that we must hold it to be at least certain that Christ was in some sense the immediate author of this sacrament, i.e., that He Himself while on earth commissioned the Apostles to employ some such sign for conferring special graces, without, however, necessarily specifying the matter and form to be used. In other words, immediate institution by Christ is compatible with a mere generic determination by Him of the physical elements of the sacrament.”

Also, you can visit this page which I provide a link in this article:
    http://www.ianpaisley.org/article.asp?ArtKey=extremeunction

You say: “You claim last Rites is a heresy. Let me provide you with a personal story. My aunt was on her death bed with cancer. Well, that is not the last rite which I discuss about in this article. The last rite which I call heresy in this article is the teaching that the practice of last rite will give people more chance to be accepted by God when they die (i.e. to go to Heaven).

  8. James: 5 v 14-16 ‘If one of you is ill, he should send for the elders of the church, + they must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord + pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man + the Lord will raise him up again; + if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. So confess your sins to one another, + pray for one another + this will heal you. John: 20v21-23. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you’. Then he BREATHED on them + said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven’.

  10. In that practice of the woman anointing Christ, she prepared him for his death. Think of this, Christ our Lord is hanging on the Cross about to die for the sins of mankind. Almost all his followers and disciples have left him. The whole world mocks him. But what can he smell on that cross? Thats right! the perfume from the oil that was anointed on his feet. That love from that woman who cared for him so much. If you know anything about that perfume it was very strong and stayed on you for days especially if you get a lot poured on. I believe that gave our Lord strength mentally while on that cross.

What do you think Last Rights does to a person that is dying? A minister/priest, (someone to them that walks with the Lord) comes to bless them before they die. The minister (hopefully) makes them conscience again of God and his Love for them. It prepares them mentally to go and meet the Lord and know that his grace, peace and love is with them through their dying and suffering.

My point of telling you the story about my aunt was to show you that even “tradition” and practices can be used for the glory of God. That God can use these sacraments and practices in your life to reach you and give you an way to draw closer to him. If my aunt didn’t believe in Last Rites she would have never meet the Lord as a result of it. You demonize a lot of things in your writings but you forget that many people were raised differently and are different and can not all be reached in the same way. Tradition and sacraments are not bad in themselves, yes the catholic church raised them higher than what they should be but they are a way to make us God conscious in our lives.

I applaud your efforts to show that last rites can not bring you salvation but to say that it has no scriptural basis and no purpose, I think your wrong.

Btw: Special graces does not necessarily mean that it will make you go to heaven or give you salvation.

Romans 8:28 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
