When a top rated striker earning a salary with endless noughts, playing for the most succesful club in europe, holds a press conference to force a transfer through to a club where his ‘heart is’ (Chelsea) but finally ends up at Man CIty, you know that footballers have lost their passion for the sport.
That was exactly the case with Robinho, the 24 year old striker almost cried during his press conference saying that his heart was at Chelsea.
‘The situation is still the same, I want to play for Chelsea, as I have told the president [Ramon Calderon], the coach and the sporting director [Predrag Mijatovic],’ he said.
‘I want to play there - I don’t know what more I can do. Calderon said that if a good offer came in they would let me go. Chelsea have made a great effort to sign me.’
But when the transfer window closed at midnight on the 1st of September, an altogether different story emerged. In the frenzy that followed that night, which included United finally securing Berbatov’s services, Man City seemed to have tabled a British record 40m Euro offer that Real couldnt refuse. City apparently now have a superstar wishlist, players they wish to target come January, bolstered by their takeover by the Arab billionaire Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, but thats a different story.
What completely dumbfounded me was how quickly Robinho changed his mind. Sure city offered a higher salary but City aren’t Chelsea. Would a player want to play for a club that regularly features in the Champions League or for one that only gives a promise of greatness? Robinho had a choice, he didnt make the right one. Real obviously infuriated with Chelsea were more than happy to sell him to City, but the player too had a say in it. It was like the Berbatov situation where the player refused City’s last minute offer to join his dream club.
Robinho joined City either for the money or because he has habit of dreaming small. Call it immaturity or greed, this transfer has left a bad taste in everyones mouth. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if Chelsea eventually end up buying Robinho from City because it would probably come after a press conference held by the sulking superstar.
As a madrid fan i was glad to see that he left but was surprised when it turned out to be man. city and not chelsea. He said he wants to be that best player in the world but honeslty in man city this will basically never happen. Instead it seems that his interest go beyond that and what he really wants is to become the wealthiest football player in the world.
