‘Tropic Thunder’ looks tasteless and of course, hilarioius

March 29, 2008 · No Comments

Another movie from the school of ‘the more people offended the funnier it is’ released its new trailer last week. Tropic Thunder, directed by Ben Stiller - his first since 2001 Zoolander - is scheduled to hit theaters in August and is already offending people, most notably with Robert Downey Jr as he is playing a white thespian who undergoes a skin procedure so he can play a role written for a black male.

So if you can get past that….well, just watch the trailer and decide for yourself:

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. So there’s this pregnant guy in Oregon…

March 27, 2008 · 3 Comments

Did you hear about the woman who used to live in Hawaii, fell in love with another woman, fought for gay marriage, lost, moved to Oregon and had a sex change, married said woman, realized she couldn’t get pregnant, stopped taking her male hormones and is now five months pregnant?

People, I can’t make this up. Read for yourself.

What in the wide, wide world of science is going on here?

I know that as we get evolve as a society science will continue to progress, become finer, resulting in things we’ve never seen. But isn’t there just a slight twinge of responsibility here? I mean, once you resign from a sex don’t you have to embrace certain items about your new sex? Aren’t there any unwritten rules of the SRS-inclined? This is slowly turning into a Seinfeld bit, but I almost feel like this is more social experiment than joy of childbirth.

Doctor’s are concerned for potential health issues for the baby, tied to its, er, mother taking 10 years of testosterone. One thing they shouldn’t be concerned about is the baby’s mother finding one of those ‘Baby on Board’ t-shirts - he runs a t-shirt printing company.

I’m not about to pass judgement on if this is in the best interest of, well, anyone involved.  Or, if it’s even legit to begin with. However, I don’t think I’d recommend this guy’s doctor to any of my friends looking to have reassignment surgery - I don’t think they were very thorough.

King James v. King Kong

March 26, 2008 · 6 Comments

Photo originally seen on hiphopdx.com

I’ve been following this growing controversy regarding the LeBron James Vogue cover. In the photo he is posing, with game face, alongside Gisele. I thought this cover was awesome. After all, famed photographer Annie Leibovitz shot it. And it was on Vogue, where James joined George Clooney and Richard Gere as only the third male and the first black male to grace the cover.

Then all hell broke loose.

Magazine analyst (is there such a thing) Samir Husni cited the magazine’s racial insensitivity by creating a cover that was so close to the famous King Kong shot where he’s holding his white woman captive atop the Empire State Building.

What?

Never in a million years would I have made that connection. Then again, I watch LeBron almost every night and am used to his game face. However, the more I look at it, I’m seeing how someone could think that. But it wasn’t until after I read this story and saw the picture critics are referencing (posted at the top of this page).

Do I really see the comparison? Or, is this another perfect example of priming, the practice of subonciously prepping one’s mind documented so well in Malcolm Gladwell’s fantastic book Blink? There has long been debates over how the national media primes us and shapes our thoughts on race.

So, which is it? Personally? I think it’s ridiculous. I’m going to trust my unbiased first take, which was far from this accusation and more along the lines of ‘geez, LeBron is huge,’ and ‘man, Gisele is so hot.’

Why would LeBron James willingly put himself  into a situation that perpetuated stereotypes of his own race? And if your argument is that he did it unknowingly….come on. This is LeBron James we’re talking about people. He’s in control of everything he does. Take it from someone who has watched him since high school.

You can’t smoke what you can’t see…right?

I think the UK has solved underage smoking.

In a move that will go to public opinion soon, the ministers are considering banning cigarette displays in stores to curb smoking and prevent underage smoking.

No word on how they’re going to eliminate smoking in video games, movies, comic books and music videos.

I wonder if they’ll start banning displays of candy, pop, cookies and chips to prevent obesity?

Screw you guys, I’m going home

March 21, 2008 · No Comments

Well goodbye, Dalai (Lama).

Did you see that the Dalai Lama is threatening to resign as the head Tibet’s government-in-exile if the Tibetan violence in his homeland continues.

Seriously, how bad does it have to be if the Dalai Lama threatens to leave? Here’s a guy who has dedicated his whole life to peace in his homeland and the world. And now he’s calling out his own people by stepping down from that post. I don’t know about you, but I think I’d listen to him.

Plus, you know if the Dalai Lama is pissed at you Richard Gere is too. I don’t think I’d want Richard Gere pissed at me.

Final Harry Potter Film to Receive Horcrux Treatment

March 19, 2008 · 4 Comments

harry_potter_6_129.jpg

*Spoiler Alert: Don’t read further if you don’t want to know what happens in the final Harry Potter book*

Much to right wing Christians’ dismay, there is now more Harry Potter to look forward to.

Word came out from the studio last week that the final film, like Lord Voldermort’s soul, will be split, receiving the Kill Bill treatment. Part one will be released in the fall of 2010, part two the following summer.

Good news for the fans who don’t want it to end — and who have been disappointed (including me) in the Order of the Phoenix interpretation, cutting several key scenes.

The bad news, however, is that the final film (Deathly Hallows) as well as the next film in the series (Half Blood Prince) are both being helmed by Order of the Phoenix director, quick cut, no substance master David Yates.

I think this is a great idea because now they have no excuse to cut anything from the final - which is how it should be. The book moves at a quick pace but needs it’s stopping points for when key information is revealed; this move will allow both of those things to work together and hopefully recreate it as best as possible.

The question I keep asking myself is where it should be broken. Personally, I think that the series of events surrounding The Battle of Hogwarts deserves it’s own film. Which means they should cut it right after Ron, Hermioine and Harry apparate to Hogsmeade and are instantly surrounded by Death Eaters.

Speaking of the final book, I never got the chance to comment on the end, which in theory, I liked. However, I can’t help but feel Rowling slapped it together at the last minute. I’ve always defended Rowling as an author because I felt that even though she wasn’t the best writer, she didn’t have to be. But I thought that we were missing something at the end. I would’ve liked to seen a two part epilogue. The first dealing with the immediate afterward of the battle, including an exchange between Harry and Ginny, plans for Hogwarts, where people were going, etc. Then they could’ve gone into the second part, which, I thought was rushed. I always pictured Harry being the headmaster at Hogwarts because it was his only true home - maybe later in life, but we’ll never know. And we’ll never know what Harry does - is he an auror like he wanted?

Ok, I’m doing being a nerd for now.

Make mine a Conway’s

March 15, 2008 · 2 Comments

I hope you have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day. As for me, I’ll be in Chicago celebrating and working at a tradeshow. I’m not sure if they have Great Lake’s Conway’s Irish Ale there, but I know they have it in Cleveland. So make it a great day - make it a Conway’s.

Ohhhhhhh, that’s good; I should be a copywriter.

Feeling ‘Feisty’

March 13, 2008 · No Comments

I got my tix to the April 23 Feist concert in Cleveland; pretty pumped. Burger friend Candis found out that Hayden is opening for her; who? Check him out - you won’t be disappointed.

On a side note, check out these awesome snow sculptures on Candis’ site. (one image above)

I’m so lame; I couldn’t even make a snow angel.

The Ohio Blizzard…and other things that pissed me off this weekend

March 12, 2008 · No Comments

I made it back from Columbus where I had a front row seat for the record setting snowfall (20.5 inches beats 15 inches). All in all, it wasn’t too bad; I had wireless; the competition I was judging was stellar and everyone was safe.

But it did give me the chance to catch up on some headlines. I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t:

President Bush is cool with torture

IRS spends $42 million on rebate reminder, way to stimulate economy (how about we start with cutting the rebate reminders?)

Oil is $108 a barrel

The dollar is $1.50 v. the Euro

“I know what you’re thinking….’why didn’t I take the blue pill!” -Cypher, The Matrix

Take the red pill people; see how far the rabbit hole goes.
