*Spoiler Alert: Don’t read further if you don’t want to know what happens in the final Harry Potter book*
Much to right wing Christians’ dismay, there is now more Harry Potter to look forward to.
Word came out from the studio last week that the final film, like Lord Voldermort’s soul, will be split, receiving the Kill Bill treatment. Part one will be released in the fall of 2010, part two the following summer.
Good news for the fans who don’t want it to end — and who have been disappointed (including me) in the Order of the Phoenix interpretation, cutting several key scenes.
The bad news, however, is that the final film (Deathly Hallows) as well as the next film in the series (Half Blood Prince) are both being helmed by Order of the Phoenix director, quick cut, no substance master David Yates.
I think this is a great idea because now they have no excuse to cut anything from the final - which is how it should be. The book moves at a quick pace but needs it’s stopping points for when key information is revealed; this move will allow both of those things to work together and hopefully recreate it as best as possible.
The question I keep asking myself is where it should be broken. Personally, I think that the series of events surrounding The Battle of Hogwarts deserves it’s own film. Which means they should cut it right after Ron, Hermioine and Harry apparate to Hogsmeade and are instantly surrounded by Death Eaters.
Speaking of the final book, I never got the chance to comment on the end, which in theory, I liked. However, I can’t help but feel Rowling slapped it together at the last minute. I’ve always defended Rowling as an author because I felt that even though she wasn’t the best writer, she didn’t have to be. But I thought that we were missing something at the end. I would’ve liked to seen a two part epilogue. The first dealing with the immediate afterward of the battle, including an exchange between Harry and Ginny, plans for Hogwarts, where people were going, etc. Then they could’ve gone into the second part, which, I thought was rushed. I always pictured Harry being the headmaster at Hogwarts because it was his only true home - maybe later in life, but we’ll never know. And we’ll never know what Harry does - is he an auror like he wanted?
Ok, I’m doing being a nerd for now.
