Odetta, 1930-2008
http://www.therevealer.org/archives/today_003138.php10:39 AM: Odetta, 1930-2008. "Some folks sing songs," writes Richard Corliss in Time. "Odetta testified." But Corliss gets one thing wrong: Odetta didn't just want to "sing black truth to white power," she wanted to sing

Bill Coday - You're Gonna Want Me (Crajon 48204)
http://redkelly.blogspot.com/2008/12/bill-coday-youre-gonna-...You're Gonna Want MeBill Coday1942-2008When I got the news this summer that Bill Coday had died, I was involved with the whole Lattimore adventure, and so never got a chance to say goodbye. He had come up singing the blues in juke joints in rural Arkansas, before heading to Chicago in the early sixties. When Denise LaSalle first heard Bill sing at the Black Orchid, she knew he was the real deal, and signed him up to the label she had started with her husband, Crajon. Her own initial release on Crajon had been picked up by the Detroit based Westbound label after it made some local noise, and she had stayed on with them. I'm not sure who got there first, but both Westbound and Crajon soon began recording with Willie Mitchell at Royal Studio in Memphis, an arrangement that helped propel both labels into the R&B top fifteen within two weeks of each other in early 1971 - The Detroit Emeralds' with Do Me Right, and Bill Coday's monster Get Your Lie Straight (Denise herself would follow, of course, with her own Willie Mitchell produced #1 smash Trapped By A Thing Called Love later that summer). This wonderful selection we have here today was the B side of Bill's breakthrough record, and demonstrates his talent not only as a singer, but as a songwriter as well... move over, Johnnie Taylor! I'm loving Hi Rhythm's bluesy side here, man. His Crajon singles would be leased for national distribution by Galaxy, and he would chart one more time for them (with When You Find A Fool Bump His Head) before signing with Epic in the mid seventies.Coday's career was still going strong, and he was a regular visitor to the Southern Soul Blues charts for Memphis based Ecko Records into the new millennium. In 2005, he formed his own company, B&J Records, releasing Jump Start to critical acclaim, as well as a 2006 Christmas Collaboration with Karen Wolfe. Bill was due back in the studio this summer, but he never made it. He was felled by a massive stroke on June 7th.May God rest his soul.Let's pause here a moment and remember these other greats who have passed on before us during the past year:BO DIDDLEYISAAC HAYESJERRY WEXLERLEVI STUBBSNORMAN WHITFIELDMIKE TERRYRICHARD 'POPCORN' WILEYBENNY GORDONJIMMIE McGRIFFAL WILSONNAPPY BROWNEARL PALMERCHUCK CARBOSENATOR JONESIRA TUCKERLULA REEDEARTHA KITTMIRIAM MAKEBAODETTABUDDY MILESMITCH MITCHELLMERLE SAUNDERSDELANEY BRAMLETTDILLARD CRUMECLYDE OTISEARL NELSONCALVIN OWENSDEE DEE WARWICKLEE 'THE BURNER' AUSTINROBERT WARDRUDY RAY MOOREPERVIS JACKSONLARRY BROWNJOHN HART JR.PATRICK GORDONKAE WILLIAMS JR.GEORGE DAVISWILBERT 'JUNKYARD DOG' ARNOLDJOHN BRUNIOUSJOHNNY GORDONBILLY DINGEDDIE SINGLETOND.C. I consider myself truly blessed to have lived both the Lattimore Brown and O.V. Wright sagas, with all of their ups and downs. Following the road that took me from Mississippi to Memphis and back again (twice), has left a profound imprint on who I am, and what it is I do.I will never forget it.It was also a year which saw the site featured in such places as The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and The Commercial Appeal which, while bringing in more visitors, also brought with it a certain amount of notoriety... notoriety which may have resulted in the recent cage-rattling by the 'International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the record companies it represents', and the deletion of some of my material. A situation which I find truly ironic, as I was recently contacted by one of those very same 'record companies it represents' asking for help in promoting one of their re-issue products... go figure.Who knows what tomorrow may bring?I'll see you next year.

Tom Power's 5 Great Things From a Crazy Year
http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/blog/2008/12/27/tom_powers_5_great_...First off, I'd like to say that Tom Power is one of my Great Things of 2008. Last autumn I bid a fond farewell to my own 1-hour world/roots-music disc show Roots & Wings after an unexpected and enjoyable 17-year run. FYI, Roots & Wings was created way back in 1991 by producer Li Robbins - your usual R2 blogger. Long story short: I was thrilled when I discovered that there was going to be a new roots music disc show on CBC R2 and that it would be hosted by the multi-talented and yes - very young - musician and story-teller Tom Power. How young, you ask? Well, Tom and I have become Facebook friends, and I've noticed his status updates often refer to his ongoing studies at MUN. While Tom brings a young man's passion to his show, Deep Roots, he also draws on his knowledge of centuries of east-coast folklore and music. I learn something every time I tune in to the show. I think Tom's excitement for music old and new shines through this list. Here's Tom Power's 5 Great Things from a Crazy Year: Best Moment of 2008 (that's right) - Odetta at the 2008 Ottawa Folk Festival. She took oxygen before she went onstage, and when she came offstage. Her performance was easily the most moving musical experience of my live and will stick with my flashbulb memory. Best Surprising Collaboration - Bluegrass Prince Ricky Skaggs with Jack White and his Raconteurs. Best Local Phenomenon: The Legend of Donnie Dumphy, a collection of shorts made my a bunch of b'ys from St. John's, including a few who work on the Mercer Report up on the mainland. They went from being underground email links, to front page of the paper in a month or so. Best Way to have heard about the US Election Results: From Stars (the band) at Club One, immediately preceding their encore of Your Ex Lover is Dead, with members of Hey Rosetta! Best Musical Moment: Singing songs sung by my Grandparents and Parents...you know 'family songs'....at the unaccompanied Ballading Workshop that I was honoured to be a part of at this year's Ottawa Folk Festival. Easily my favorite experienced musical moment of 2008.

The Gospel According to St. Matthew
http://www.quixoticquisling.com/2008/12/the-gospel-according...Merry Christmas. This clip is from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s very highly recommended The Gospel According to St. Matthew. The soundtrack is a version of the old negro spiritual Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child as sung by Odetta, who passed away this year.

For You.
http://hstringer.wordpress.com/2008/12/19/for-you/December 19, 2008 Your voice, is a song, still sounding in my ears. And that song, up close, I haven’t heard for years. So I go and I stay, my heart’s running a little late, I stop myself from moving on, And I sit, and I wait, for you to play your song; I still sit, and I wait, but your music is gone. While you were sleeping.
http://kyleshell.wordpress.com/2008/12/19/while-you-were-sle...What really gets me is the sad truth that Mark Hall sings about in this song, 3:16 into the song. It’s sad to think that our country has gotten so far away from what it was originally founded upon. The core beliefs and values of the day seemed to simply vanish as time has gone forward and the people have turned away from God. Like this song, I hope we as a nation do not miss out while we are “sleeping.” Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)My Redeemer.. listening to the sound of the ‘that’ song..Saturday Night Live (SNL) - Hall + Oates sing Obama + McCain songDiscuss: Favorite Movie Songs from 2008? ~ by Kyle Shell on December 19, 2008.
