"Controvery" Of The Week
http://pufferfish.typepad.com/weblog/2008/12/controvery-of-t...I really don't get why this is sexist. Clearly that makes me sexist. Politicians are supposed to watch what they say - especially when a nearby microphone might be on. But, yesterday in Philadelphia, Gov. Ed Rendell made some blunt remarks that could be construed as insulting, if not sexist, about Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, chosen for Homeland Security chief by President-elect Barack Obama. A spokesman for Rendell downplayed any controversy, saying that Pennsylvania's governor "meant no disrepect." Rendell's words were picked up by an open microphone at the podium of the National Governors Conference, held yesterday morning at Independence Hall. "Janet's perfect for that job," Rendell is heard to say. "Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19, 20 hours a day to it." Am I missing something? This was enough for Campbell Brown to release the feminist dogs of waron Rendell, the same guy who for the last year has been schilling across Pennsylvania on behalf of Hillary Clinton. Rendell's big mistake here seems to be saying something that's blatantly true which has allowed nitwits to get on their soapbox and turn it into a media firestorm as a means of generating controversy that can help pay the studio's electric bill. Napolitano is about to take over running the grand clusterbang that is DHS and Rendell is rightly pointing out that the job is demanding and better suited for someone who can devote all their attention to the job. Sure, he's an ass for insinuating that people without families don't have lives, but he's also working under the truthful assumption that people in high positions of government often have to sacrifice time spent with their family to get their job done. That's not sexist. That's a predicament that most Americans deal with when juggling responsibilities at home and at work. The nonsense here comes from the Campbell Browns of the world pretending it's still 1955 and that a misogynistic asshole in the role of Rendell must be perplexed as to why women aren't barefoot and making them dinner. What Rendell was saying is one of those often ignored issues among hard working, successful people. In order to get ahead they often have to make a sacrifice at home. That goes for Barack Obama, Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton. Guy or girl it doesn't matter. And the reason he was saying it is because Napolitano is unique in that she doesn't have a family. That stands out. Especially because most of these people all know what it's like to ignore their loved ones for years on end. Now can we back away from bashing Rendell and spend some quality time making fun of the Wasilla Wingnut ringing up another $30,000 in the name of pushing forward a feminist agenda?
