Empty Netter Assists - Western Conference - 12-03-08
http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/emptynetters/archive...Central Division -Blue Jackets prospect Stefan Legein is expected to rejoin the organization after "retiring" this summer. -The Blue Jackets denied a report that goaltender Fredrik Norrena signed with a team in Sweden. Norrena's agent denied the report as well. -Columbus put forward Raffi Torres (right) on injured reserve. -Some of those famous rooftop seats near Wrigley Field could be made available for the Winter Classic. -How old is Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios? Whenever he returns from injury and makes his season debut, he'll be the oldest professional athlete in any major North American sports league. -The Red Wings are expected to demote Chelios to Grand Rapids of the AHL for a conditioning assignment. -Detroit forward Kris Draper is still a dependable faceoff specialist. -The Blackhawks have demoted forward Martin Havlat to the third line. -Divers found the body of former Blackhawks All-Star Hubert "Pit" Martin in a Quebec lake. Northwest Division -The Oilers recalled forward Rob Schremp from Springfield of the AHL. Schremp, an Oilers' first-round pick in 2004, spent most of the 2006-07 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. -Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo claims he is ahead of schedule in recovering from his groin injury. -Luongo's backup, Curtis Sanford is dealing with a back injury. -Vancouver is lacking secondary scoring. -Avalanche coach Tony Granato is more relaxed in his second tenure as the team's bench boss. -The Wild have gotten by just fine without injured forward Marian Gaborik (right). For now. Pacific Division -The Stars shrugged off the hoopla of Sean Avery and won at Calgary, 3-1. Marty Turco made 36 saves in the win. Former Penguins forward Toby Petersen scored a goal for Dallas. -Joe Thornton marked the three year anniversary of his arrival to San Jose by scoring a goal and recording three assists for the Sharks who defeated the Maple Leafs and their former coach, Ron Wilson, 5-2. San Jose's win tied it with the 1943-44 Canadiens for the best record 25 games into a season. -Wilson got a polite applause from the Sharks fans during the game. -Enver Linsin scored two goals and helped the Coyotes defeat the Kings, 4-2. -Stars co-general manager wasn't crazy about Sean Avery's comments either. -Amazing how few people are praising Hull and the team's other co-general manager, Les Jackson, as geniuses these days. Seriously, what where they expecting when they signed Sean Avery? And don't forget, Avery is in the first year, heck, first two months, of a four-year deal. There's a reason Avery has been shown the door by his previous three NHL employers, the Red Wings, Kings and Rangers. It will also be the reason the Stars probably do the same. -Les Jackson isn't happy either. -Stars coach and former Penguins forward Dave Tippett (right) isn't happy either. -Perhaps worst of all, Avery's teammates weren't happy either. -Did the NHL miss an opportunity to generate interest by suspending Avery? -Avery's comments certainly did generate some mainstream buzz for the NHL. -Tim Cowlishaw for the Dallas Morning News says Avery is a phony. -Sharks coach Todd McLellan is making the most out of his chances with the Sharks. -Ducks rookie defenseman Brett Festerling is getting some on-the-job training. -Anaheim is relying on its goaltending too much. -Martin Hanzal has helped the Coyotes improve in the faceoff circle. -The Sharks purchased a share of the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS. Adams Division -What's up with injury reports in the NHL? -If you're over the age of 25, good luck winning the Art Ross Trophy. -Former Erie Otters player Jason Baird has some good fans. Your Last Winter Classic Option: The Rooftops
http://www.mouthpiecesports.com/blog/2008/12/02/your-last-wi...Guess what: You probably won’t be able to get a ticket to the Winter Classic at Wrigley on January 1. It’s true. Unless you are prepared to do horrible things … unspeakable acts … the kinds of things your grandchildren will ask you about — did you really do that, grandpa? – and you will look off in the distance like a Hemingway character, deep and full of regret, and you will say “Grandpa doesn’t talk about those times.” Unless you are prepared to commit atrocities that will haunt your soul forever … you’re unlikely to get to see a hockey game in the freezing cold on January 1. Tickets are too expensive, and demand is too high. But before you go blowing up any Spanish bridges or joining any Italian war services, there is a final option. The rooftops! Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) wants to give the owners of rooftop clubs overlooking Wrigley approval to sell tickets to the event Blackhawks President John McDonough says “has the potential to be … the toughest regular-season ticket to secure in the history of Chicago sports.” “It’s a fierce rivalry. Interest is very high and ticket prices are very high. There’s an opportunity for the rooftops to do some business,” said Tunney, who has introduced an ordinance authorizing rooftop clubs currently limited to Cubs home games to be open Jan. 1. “The toughest ticket in the history of Chicago sports.” Apparently John McDonough hasn’t heard of the Chicago Rush.
