American Atheists Inc. sued in state court over a 2002 law that stresses God’s role in Kentucky’s homeland security alongside the military, police agencies and health departments. Of particular concern is a 2006 clause requiring the Office of Homeland Security to post a plaque that says the safety and security of the state “cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon almighty God” and to stress that fact through training and educational materials. The plaque, posted at the Kentucky Emergency Operations Center in Frankfort, includes the Bible verse: “Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” “It is one of the most egregiously and breathtakingly unconstitutional actions by a state legislature that I’ve ever seen,” said Edwin F. Kagin, national legal director of Parsippany, N.J.-based American Atheists Inc. The group claims the law violates both the state and U.S. constitutions. Honestly, I think we need all the help we can get. One question is whether or not the atheists should first sue Kentucky over the actual text of their state constitution: We, the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, grateful to Almighty God for the civil, political and religious liberties we enjoy, and invoking the continuance of these blessings, do ordain and establish this Constitution. The abuse of the judicial system continues in full force. I’m sure this will go all the way to SCOTUS and Kentucky will lose, but it doesn’t make it right in my opinion. Fox News

This time their attack is directed toward Kentucky's Office of Homeland Security. The offense, placing a plaque that says the safety of the state "cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God." Edwin F. Kagin stated "It is one of the most egregiously and breathtakingly unconstitutional actions by a state legislature that I've ever seen." I suppose had this group been around in 1776 they would have filed a lawsuit over the following words in the Declaration of Independence "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." As the definition of atheism maintains "Atheism is a doctrine that states that nothing exists but natural phenomena (matter), that thought is a property or function of matter, and that death irreversibly and totally terminates individual organic units. This definition means that there are not forces, phenomena, or entities which exist outside of or apart form physical nature, or which transcend nature, or are "super" natural, nor can there be. Humankind is on its own." Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Also on their website that I find very sad way to live is this statement. "An Atheist believes that he can get no help through prayer but that he must find in himself the inner conviction, and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it and enjoy it." Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. An Atheist believes that only in knowledge of himself and a knowledge of his fellow man can he find understanding that will help a life of fulfillment. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. He seeks to know himself and his fellow man rather than to know a god. An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An Atheist believes that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An Atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanquished, war eliminated. He wants man to understand and love man. I don't know of any Christian that does not desire some of the same things stated above, however, we also know that man using his own power and intellect will never accomplish any of the above goals. John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. Another troubling statement "What is occurring is that right-wing, evangelical Christians are manipulating the state into giving them leave to charge into any building of their choosing and command all to stop whatever they are doing, so they can satisfy their self-absorbed urge to conduct ritualistic gyrations in front of the unwilling or uninterested. And then to top it off, they would blame the audience because of a resistance to participate. They would blame the audience because divine communication cannot be effectively established unless they are silent and in a posture displaying the reverent awe required for this intrusive behavior." (Barrier, R 1997) Why are the atheists singling out Christianity? Yet when those of Islamic beliefs want a classroom for prayer or Islam is taught in the classroom under the guise of social studies, they remain silent. Barrier also stated that in regard to school prayer was way to expose minor children to religion behind parents' backs and without their permission. It drives a wedge between children and parents, using religion as the hammer. It is a blatant attempt to prey on the immature and formative minds of young children before they developed the critical thinking skills necessary to understand and debate arguments predicated upon appeals to emotion and "superstitious ramblings." Mark 10:13-15 And they brought young children to him, that he should tough them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. In Matthew 10:32-36 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. Christianity does cause a divide among those who do not believe, even among those who claim they believe with their lips but their actions say otherwise. We can reach out to the atheist and other non-believers and pray that the Lord will touch their hearts so that they will accept Him as their Lord and Savior. I close with these verses. Ephesians 4:12-14 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive. I'm all for public and government display of religious concepts like "In God we Trust" and "One Nation, Under God". But this seems to go a little too far. I don't know why people waste time and effort defending stuff like this. It's one reason this country is becoming less and less religious.

It would not surprise me to not only see a united front by Christians behind this issue, but a joining of other theists in the battle of how national and state constitutions are interpreted as either theistic or secular documents... and even moreso whether these documents forbid references to God, or even by their own example provide for the legality of doing so (this being the better and more decisive issue the present case must address). In this light, this case should be seen by theists as a LANDMARK and WATERSHED CASE, and therefore one not to be taken lightly, but one in which FULL support (i.e., prayer, encouragment, finances, mobilization, etc.) is put behind those leading the charge. Beyond this, the example in Kentucky illustrates the good that can come from lawmakers using the wording found in constitutional documents and more broadly applying them to other areas of life and legislation in honoring the divine being. Similar to the methodology of ID propenents, theist supporters of the constitution should see this as the foremost battle, and the question of accompanying Bible verses a separate issue.It is one of the most egregiously and breathtakingly unconstitutional actions by a state legislature that I've ever seen," said Edwin F.
