  1. The purpose of charts is normally to make information easier, not harder, to understand

    http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2008/09/16/8953255.aspx

In a presentation a few years ago, there was a pie chart, but not just any pie chart, but a pie chart that appeared to be specifically designed to convey no information whatsoever. 2. The terms of service you have to accept before you can see them

    http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2008/09/12/8945693.aspx

I had a few hours to kill at the airport a few years ago before my flight was ready for boarding, so I turned on my laptop and connected to the airport's wireless network. Like most pay services, they way you sign up is to fire up a web browser and go to any web site. …

  3. Who is responsible for destroying the font passed in the WM_SETFONT message?

    http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2008/09/12/8945692.aspx

The WM_SETFONT message tells a control which font you would like the control to use for its text. This message is a convention, not a rule. For example, our scratch program doesn't pay attention to the WM_SETFONT message. If somebody sends it a WM_SETFONT, nothing happens. …

Are you human? How CAPTCHA asks the wrong question & solves nothing

    http://www.slash7.com/articles/2009/1/6/are-you-human-how-ca...

even more speedily, you can use human's weaknesses as leverage (weaknesses other than money!). Some brilliant folks source CAPTCHAs from the sites they wish to infiltrate and put them in front of download links for pirated copies of music, movies and porno. The people seeking the music and porn will fill out the CAPTCHA for free, without thinking "Oh no! What if this CAPTCHA stands between Yahoo! Mail and one more spambot? How will I ever live with myself?"

How you can write code both works with console and windowed mode?

    http://sarathc.wordpress.com/2009/01/05/how-you-can-write-co...

In a recent post, Raymond Chen explained about an interesting post regarding application which can run under both windows and console. You can’t, but you can try to fake it. Each PE application contains a field in its header that specifies which subsystem it was designed to run under. You can say IMAGE_SUBSYSTEM_WINDOWS_GUI to mark yourself as a Windows GUI application, or you can say IMAGE_SUBSYST
