"Yes We Can!" Students Rename School for Obama
http://blogs.abcnews.com/ politicalpunch/ 2008/ 11/ ye...ABC News' Matt Jaffe Reports: A New York elementary school has been re-named in honor of President-elect Barack Obama. Ludlum Elementary School in Long Island's Hempstead Union Free School District was re-named at a board meeting Thursday, at the request of numerous school students. "Just to watch these kids after the board voted on what they asked them to do, they were so elated," school district superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria told ABC News. "You want to talk about "Yes we can!"? That was a lesson in democracy." Effective immediately, Ludlum will now be known as Barack Obama Elementary School, following a decision by the board to adopt the resolution drafted by students and staff.

year in review
http://justfivegrins.blogspot.com/2008/12/year-in-review.htm...The three Kiddo's still make the world go around. Steve Fossett asks himself what that goat is doing in the clouds? OK so my 2008 predictions didn't exactly pull 100%. They did in fact rename a school in honor of our soon to be 44th President. Leogrande did get his fair review and just sentence . Giants become giant-killers as they squeak by the then undefeated Pats (and in the end Hillary also trumped Romney politically)! Who's gloating now ( XOM - SBUX )? Tyler's wearing the Stars & Stripes. PruDog will make a triumphant return chasing pie primes in the NW. Alaska Airlines has pilots filing for food stamps. Racing - well watching others race around me - wasn't such a highlight year for me (though the team shined ), but there's always next season. Summit-the Sun Climb for Kids is still postponed, no word on when the attempt will be made - mountain is patient, legs will be there to take it on....someday.

Barack Obama Elementary School
http://prayforbarackobama.blogspot.com/2008/11/barack-obama-...Few days ago, Political Punch' Jake Tapper reported that A New York elementary school has been re-named in honor of President-elect Barack Obama. While some are calling this move a "cult of personality", I believe this decision should be viewed as an event "honoring those who inspire us". Remember that the school name has been amended on students' request. Indeed, in the course of our lives we demonstrate - in various and creative ways - great kindness to individuals who helped shape our character. We are grateful to those mentors without whom we would not have been where we are now; Friends, parents, relatives and even strangers are showered with our praises whenever they make a positive contribution in our lives. So why not rename a school after a politician who made us realize that honesty, transparency, courage, altruism, generosity and most importantly HOPE can cohabit with politics and power. A man who convincingly reminded us that hard work truly pays off whenever we remain persistent. Finally, in his acceptance speech in Denver last August Barack Obama repeated one of the most important rules that shaped his campaign: "you are not strong by putting other people down. You're strong by lifting other people up".

Reaction to Barack Obama ES
http://thefdhlounge.blogspot.com/2008/11/reaction-to-barack-...Reaction to Barack Obama ES By Tony Mazur Last night, I posted a blog about a Long Island elementary school changing their name to "Barack Obama Elementary School". Kind of premature, don't you think? The man hasn't even become the president yet. Even Obama supporters should feel that this is too early. However, as I read the comments on the story, a rage came over me. While I agreed with many of the comments (from both sides of the political spectrum), there were a few that proved to me what is truly wrong with America. Those who supported the name change accused the other posters as being racist and full of hate, a common theme. Let me share a few with you, misspellings and inaccuracies in all. The comments from the ABC website are in italics, and my two cents will be in bold. "WOW! The hate I see spewed here is incredible! I guess it just goes to underline that ABC is actually a Republican media outlet... All you haters out there: Can't you see that the last eight years were solely the result of republican 'leadership'? The president (Cheney...) was republican, Congress was republican (yes, we had a slim majority of dems the last 2 years, but not enough to affect any change, because of something called FILIBUSTER), so ALL THIS MESS we are in is THANKS TO REPUBLICANS and their combined greediness! So, now we finally have someone who promises HOPE and CHANGE (even IF it would be just change from the direction of the disatrous last eight years!), and people in the street are starting to breathe sighs of relief and excitement again - and here you come, trying to squash them. Kids are excited, black kids have a rolemodel, and you are demeaning them? Here you have one black person who 'made' it, and who is willing to help YOU and willing to help get some selfesteem into the black (as well as white and latino and asian!) community, and you poo-pooh the pride coming out of kids. Way to go, repubs! You are just jealous that 'YOUR' president has not inspired kids to rename 'their' schools after him! (What would that name be: "Dumbya" school? or "My Pet Goat" school? or "I got my millions, don't care about you" school? How about "Abu Ghraib School" or "Guantanamo's Best" school.) Apparently this person is allergic to proper grammar, punctuation, and bringing up intelligent points. You go, kids of Barack Obama School! Don't let anyone take your excitement away from you! Now, follow his example and strive to be the best you can be, and don't forget compassion to others! Follow his example of lying about your background to get elected into office, and if someone calls you on it, play the race card. A lot of these comments demonstrate why the Republican Party now has a 61% disapproval rating. Keep it up. Maybe you can drive it into the 70's or 80's and make yourselves completely irrelevant. That is, until the American people get fed up with the Democratic Empire and vote Republican in 2010. What a very nice and inspiring thing to do... With so much hate out there, it's good to know that there is also HOPE. What is this 'Hope' word I've heard so much about. Whatever it means, I haven't seen any. It's wonderful when a President, who ran a campaign based on integrity, honesty, fairness, no dirty stricks, and his life is a model of hard work despite big obstacles to aim for the highest level of education, has inspired little children to do the same in their own life. I am sure that from now on all of them will work harder with a smile on their face and are proud of themselves. Obama's wish to make things better from each one of us and from the bottom up already has happened. I had wished the same and am so proud of all those little ones. He ran a campaign based on cult status. The only thing he inspired me was to not vote Democrat. And what were the big obstacles? Denouncing a racist preacher that you've went to for twenty years? Having a wife that won't shut her fat mouth? Having ties to anti-Semites, anarchists, anti-Christs, and terrorists? What a great story. As someone who works in the juvenile justice system, it's wonderful to see those children energized about our political system. I think P.E. Obama will be a great role model for our young minority children. Through him, they will see that they can achieve great things through hard work. Three cheers for the Barak Obama Elementary School. You go kids!!! Mom and dad should be at the top of the list when it comes to role models in a child's life, no matter the race, gender, or sexuality. I'm sure a lot of the haters on here have done such great things for this country, NOT. GO AMERICA, GO OBAMA! Oh, I get it. This poster used sarcasm on us! He took me one way when I thought he was going another. How clever of you! This is a great story. All of the negative comments about what these kids did seem to be from sore losers or something worse. It is about time our young people take pride in their government. Young people have NO SAY. A citizen cannot vote until they are eighteen years of age. Who cares what a bunch of 5th graders say about the state of our country. Talk to me when a 5th grader brings up a poignant idea when it comes to foreign policy and the financial crisis. TOTALLY AWESOME! Like, far out! Marvy! What a wonderful story! I expect many more schools, post offices, buildings and CHILDREN to be named after our new President! Explain to your children why their name and/or the name of their school is named after an incompetent Chicago politician. Posted by Tony Mazur

News From the Silliness Blotter
http://www.blrag.com/blog/2008/11/24/news-from-the-silliness...Or perhaps this belongs with the other insanities at the Give Me A Stinking Break Desk. Can anyone give one solid, substantial, justifiable reason to rename a school for Barack Obama, two months before he even takes office, based upon the desires of the young skulls full of mush who attend said school? Idiocy. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/11/yes-we-can-stud.html

11/24 Roundup: CitiFAIL, Frenemies, Turkey Execution
http://ndnblog.org/node/3291Leader: CitiFAIL - As you may recall, Hank Paulson reassured us all a week ago when he told us that the financial system had been stabilized. As if on cue, Citigroup burst into a ball of magnificent flames, and demanded government rescue. Last night, the Treasury, Fed and FDIC announced they had reached a deal, whereby the government will invest another $20 billion in the financial behemoth, and backstop as much as $306 billion of buggered assets. In return, the government will become the proud owner of $7 billion in preferred shares, with more coming, if more public dollars are used to back up the bank. - Louise Story at the NY Times reports on the bailout, take three. Will it work better this time? - Paul Krugman's short take on the deal: It's a bad deal. - Steve Forbes makes it official: Hank Paulson is the worst Treasury Secretary in modern times. Politics - Michael Lind at Salon takes up an old rhetorical battle, and asks if it's ok to be "liberal" again, instead of "progressive." I vote yes. - Hillary is now more or less a lock to head the State Department, and New York's John Heilemann writes on the relationship between Hillary and Barack: The closest of frenemies. - Virginia is moving closer to abandoning some of its notoriously harsh policies toward illegal immigrants, making the state less hostile and more accepting of the situation's reality. - Perhaps this is part of a Republican strategy to reverse their fortune among Hispanics? The Denver Post reports on the blue drift in Hispanic-heavy states, and quotes Simon talking about how Republicans lost serious ground with Hispanics because of their anti-immigrant policies. Even Texas, he says, could turn blue as a blueberry. International - Brent Scowcroft (a Republican, but a foreign policy realist, not like those crazy neocons) has been speaking regularly with Barack Obama, and is the ideological forbear of many Obama foreign policy advisors, particularly those from the right side of the aisle. - Obama has also been chatting it up with Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan. Let's hope Obama makes good on his campaign promise to prioritize the conflict there, and get the country under control. One More Thing - Students at a Long Island elementary school voted to rename their school after Barack Obama. - Will spazzy Democrats tip the scales for Al Franken? Perhaps: “Democrats are [thought to be] more creative, free-spirited, so the idea is they’re more likely to make a mistake that the optical scan won’t pick up. But when they recount the hard copy, those votes will be counted for Franken. If you talk to Republicans, they say it will be Franken’s advantage, because Democrats are stupid and will screw up ballots more often.” - Happy Thanksgiving week! MSNBC does a "where are they now" on the pardoned turkeys of Thanksgivings past. - Last, in case you haven't seen this yet, Sarah Palin blathers while innocent birds are systematically executed over her left shoulder. Shudder.

Obama Worship So I'm finding this trend of Obama Worship rather disturbing. See, it's one thing to be proud of your president and all of that. If you think the guy is great, awesome for you. But I wonder, were schools named after JFK while he was still in office? There was also talk of making a national holiday in honor of 'The One'. Should we put up giant posters and erect massive statues in his honor while we are at it? I don't want to say it, but usually, in the US of A, when we honor a President with monuments and statues, libraries and schools named in their honor, you do it after they served their time as president. After they have proved that they are a President worth celebrating. Barack Obama has not even been inaugurated yet and people want to bow down and worship him. If anything, this rings truer to Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong Il then Abraham Lincoln and FDR. If we want to create a holiday in Barack Obama's name, do it AFTER he's served his time as President and proved to be a successful President. Not before he's been sworn in on account of Hope and Change. Because if he proves to be a huge disaster and the Change he brings isn't the kind we hoped for, I think a few people will be regretting naming their schools after him. People talk about the Hubris of Barack Obama, this certainly adds to his enormous ego. Labels: Obama

Aides are hinting Obama may not repeal the tax break on the wealthiest Americans until 2010 or beyond. Saxby Chambliss skipped a vote this week on unemployment benefits because he was out giving a capaign speech……on unemployment.
