Miyazaki trounces ‘Dark Knight’ at Japanese box office

Despite their best efforts, The Joker and Two-Face couldn’t bring down Batman, but leave it up to a Japanese goldfish to put him in his place. Hayo Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s latest effort Ponyo on a Cliff By The Sea has raked in a respectable $93 million in the last month, while Christopher Nolan’s sophomore Batman effort The Dark Knight - a certifiable smash in the U.S. - hasn’t even cracked $10 million in its’ first three weeks. /film takes note of Dark Knight’s spectacular underperformance, which has also paled in comparison to other U.S. fare (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and What Happens in Vegas).
