Making of a QB: Mara was 'cool' on Eli
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/08/making-of-a-...Making of a QB: Mara was 'cool' on Eli When Eli Manning was introduced as the Giants’ Quarterback of the Future on Draft Day, 2004, everyone in the Giants’ organization insisted the same thing: The decision to trade for him was unanimous. This wasn’t just Ernie Accorsi’s obsession. Everyone in the building wanted to make the deal. Four years later, while researching my new book - Eli Manning: The Making of a Quarterback - I learned that wasn’t completely true. In the days before the trade, Wellington Mara - the then 87-year-old patriarch of the Giants - was, as Accorsi described him, “cool” to the idea. It wasn’t that Mara didn’t like or want Eli Manning. It was that he had strong feelings for Kerry Collins, and after watching him lead the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV he didn’t want to just cast Collins aside. Less than a week before the trade, Accorsi was still very worried that Mara might end up vetoing the deal. Some of the details can be found right here, in the first of two excerpts from my book that will be running in the Daily News. The second excerpt will run tomorrow. A little more info on the book can be found here. It’ll officially be released on Tuesday, though Amazon has already started shipping it, and it should be in bookstores everywhere by now.
