Invitation To Attend Distributed Learning Symposium ‘09

This showed up in my inbox earlier today.  If you’re into distance education in Alberta (or generally), this looks to be a good line-up.

Hello and welcome to the Distributed Learning Symposium ‘09,

We are very excited about the March 11,12,13 - Distributed Learning Symposium ‘09 at the Hyatt Regency in Calgary.
Our program is finalized and ADETA members who attend can choose from more than 70 different presentations and forums.  You can check out the complete symposium details at: http://symposium.adeta.org/

We hope you’ll join the distributed learning community at the event to learn about what’s new in the industry, share your knowledge and network with people across the three sectors; K-12, post-secondary and workplace.

Our line-up includes featured key-notes Jason Ohler, Guy Kawasaki, and Curtis Johnson.  You can preview the entire program here.

We also encourage you to participate in the pre-conference online forums – the next one will be hosted by a keynote panelist, George Siemens and will start January 15th.  Even if you can’t attend the conference, you can join us on the website and add your voice.

Book now! The early bird rate is available until January 16th.

The Hyatt is also offering special rates for Symposium ‘09 attendees.  You can find out more information and book here.

We look forward to seeing you there!

USDLA Early Bird Registration Deadline And Ball Game Information

Sorry for going a couple of days without posting, but tis the season…  And I would probably expect more of the same until after the New Year, only sporadic posting between now and 04-05 Janaury.  But when I return the long promised entries on my visit to Odyssey Cyber Charter School, the continuing discussion of Disrupting Class, problems I have with charter schools, and an update from around the blogsphere (which will include a lot of videos posted by Darren over at Teaching and Developing Online).

Until this, here’s something that showed up in my inbox this morning…

MVU Symposium Keynote Videos

This was an e-mail about the symposium and keynote videos, but I’ve tried to edit out the stuff about the evaluation while still publicizing the keynote videos.

Dear Symposium Attendee,

Thank you for participating in Michigan Virtual University’s® Fifth Annual Online Learning Symposium on Dec. 3. We hope that you found the event engaging, informative and thought-provoking.
[stuff deleted] Videos of the symposium’s keynote addresses are also posted at the same site.
Link to Symposium [stuff deleted] Keynote Videos: http://www.mivu.org/symposium/
More than 350 people like you attended this year’s symposium. We hope that you will be able to take the discussion about disruptive innovation and the future of online learning back to your schools and offices, recruiting more partners in the mission of promoting and improving online learning.
Again, thank you for taking part in this year’s symposium. Because of people like you, we believe this year’s event was one of the best we’ve ever hosted.
Sincerely,
Jamey Fitzpatrick

MVU Symposium - The Challenges, Implications And Next Steps

The sixth session of the day at the MVU Symposium is:

The Challenges, Implications and next Steps

The panelists will express their views taking into account what they heard today regarding disruptive innovation and the future of online learning. The audience will have an opportunity to present their views and ask questions.

Panelists:
Michael Flanagan, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Michigan Department of Education
Dan DeGrow, Superintendent, St. Clair RESA
Jayne Mohr, Associate Superintendent, Traverse City Area Public Schools Michigan Online Teacher of the Year
Jamey Fitzpatrick, President & CEO, MVU
Moderator, Richard Ferdig, Associate Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at the University of Florida
Michael Horn and Warren Buckleitner will also be available to provide clarification and reaction

After a presentation of a plaque for being named number two in the US for K-12 online learning policy (see Michigan Ranks Second in U.S. For Online Learning), Rick began the panel with a question that basically asked, what does disruptive innovation mean to you in your position?  The responses thus far are largely picking their favorite quotes from Michael Horn’s presentation this morning.

After the initial responses, they moved to a question and answer session.  Some interesting questions too…

  • What do we do when it comes to the students (and schools) caught in the digital divide?
  • If you were to design a school for next year, what is one thing you would include or incorporate into that school?
  • What other one or two things, beyond the seat time waiver, should MDE be considering to make education more modular?
  • What about students who need a GED?
  • What about students who’s parents are having to leave Michigan to find work?

Guess we are approaching the end of the day, as this entry is brief and my Tweets are few.  Those few Twitter entries from the session:

MVU Symposium: Panel - Providing their closing thoughts now, reception to begin soon!

MVU Symposium: Panel - State has issued about 10 seat time waivers in MI to allow for online learning outside of the traditional classroom.
