“SREB Online Teacher Resources”
Register Now Open until 3 PM (ET) the day before the webinar.

Without question, online teachers are extremely important to the online student success. In recent months Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) has launched several efforts to support and help online teachers. These include the http://srebonlineteachers.org web site that is specifically for online teachers. It provides up-to-date information and resources including the Cool Tools area that provides information on many Web 2.0 applications that are usable by online teachers and their students. Funding for this effort comes from AT&T.

Linked to the online teacher web site is a second web site supported by eCollege/Pearson Foundation http://srebonlineteachers.org that is also specifically for online teachers. This web site provides online teachers an opportunity to participate in facilitated forums with other online teachers from across the country (and perhaps the world) related to the subjects they teach online.

Information about these web sites for your online teachers will be discussed during this iNACOL webinar. In addition, time permitting, new SREB publications, Online Teachers: What Can SREB States Do to Ensure Competence and Quality? and Do Online Courses Work for Middle Grades and High School Students? Online Students Have Their Say will be briefly reviewed.

Presenter

Bill Thomas, Director Education Technology, SREB

“Promising Practices in K-12 Online Learning: Funding and Legislation for Online Education”
Register Now Open until 2 PM (ET) the day before the webinar.

This series, Promising Practices in Online Learning, explores some of the approaches being taken by practitioners and policymakers in response to key issues in online learning. The title, Promising Practices, deliberately avoids the term “best practices.” There are too many approaches to online learning, and too many innovative teaching and learning strategies in the 21st century, for one method to be labeled “best.” Instead, this series aims to discuss the issues and explore examples from some of the many online programs across the country, with a goal of illuminating some of the methods showing the most promise.

This Webinar will focus on the important issues of funding online programs and the legislation issues that online educators and learners encounter; this is the topic of the next publication to be released by iNACOL, so this is your chance to contribute and discuss these topics as the study is completed.

2009 Intel Schools of Distinction - Call For Applications

This was posted to one of the iNACOL forums by Allison Powell (the Vice-President of iNACOL).

Each year the Intel Schools of Distinction Award Program recognizes six schools from across the country for their extraordinary commitment to educational excellence based on their innovative programs in math and science. Each winner receives a $10,000 cash grant from the Intel Foundation which is supplemented by a robust award package that includes curriculum materials, professional development resources, hardware and software provided by the program’s generous sponsors several which are current members of iNACOL; resulting in a total prize package per school valued at more than $150,000!

As a past Affiliate Sponsor of this program, we are hopeful that iNACOL will help disseminate the 2009 call for applications. iNACOL members likely have customers whom not only would qualify for the program but would greatly benefit from becoming a 2009 School of Distinction. Applications are due February 17, 2009. For your convenience, sample wording has been provided for you to edit based on available space in your member communications.

Intel Schools of Distinction program exemplifies excellence and we are honored to include iNACOL as an Affiliate Sponsor on this unique program.

Thank you in advance,

Melinda

K-12 Online Learning NINGs

Okay, I’m coming a litle late to the game on some of these (or at least one of them).  I received a Google alert yesterday for Virtual High School Meanderings and discovered that Kate Logan (from the Wyoming eAcademy of Virtual Education) had linked me into her blog (see Thoughts from BFE - which I’ve added to the blogroll to the right).

Finding Kate’s blog lead me to a NING site that the Western Committee of iNACOL had created.  I hadn’t known about it before, so I immediately joined.

In the past (see Virtual School NING), I mentioned a NING created by Derek Wenmoth.

Virtual Schooling - This network is designed to engage those working in the development of virtual schooling networks around the world. Virtual schooling involves any situation where a learner’s experience of schooling is partially or completely online - whether provide by a virtual/online school, or by independent providers delivering courses into existing school environments.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it in the past, but iNACOL has a NING of their own as well.

K12 Online Learning - This is a network for people to share ideas, resources, and questions about the world of K-12 Online Learning.

There is also one that I know of created by a group of K-12 online learning folks in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan e-Learning Network - A space for Saskatchewan High Schools to share information about distance learning opportunities they offer.

The only other one I know about is the closed one used by Odyssey Charter School (see Social Networking and Web 2.0 in Online Courses).
