“Promising Practices in K-12 Online Learning: Funding and Legislation for Online Education”

As the new year begins, state legislatures will be starting their sessions and online learning will be on the agenda in many states. What are the most important funding and legislative issues for states to consider, and what can we learn from key policy developments from recent years? Panel participants Roy Takumi (State Representative of Hawaii’s 36th District), Lisa Gillis (Director of Government Affairs/School Development for Insight Schools), and Mickey Revenaugh (Vice President, State Relations for Connections Academy) and moderator John Watson (lead author of the annual Keeping Pace with K12 Online Learning report and of NACOL’s series Promising Practices in Online Learning) will review policy issues and look at the upcoming legislative sessions.

Without question, online teachers are extremely important to the online student success. In recent months Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) has launched several efforts to support and help online teachers. These include the http://srebonlineteachers.org web site that is specifically for online teachers. It provides up-to-date information and resources including the Cool Tools area that provides information on many Web 2.0 applications that are usable by online teachers and their students. Funding for this effort comes from AT&T.

Linked to the online teacher web site is a second web site supported by eCollege/Pearson Foundation http://srebonlineteachers.org that is also specifically for online teachers. This web site provides online teachers an opportunity to participate in facilitated forums with other online teachers from across the country (and perhaps the world) related to the subjects they teach online.

Information about these web sites for your online teachers will be discussed during this iNACOL webinar. In addition, time permitting, new SREB publications, Online Teachers: What Can SREB States Do to Ensure Competence and Quality? and Do Online Courses Work for Middle Grades and High School Students? Online Students Have Their Say will be briefly reviewed.

Each session features an active researcher talking about their project, methodologies used, and their results. The sessions are presented free of charge and recorded for playback from the CIDER site.

This series, Promising Practices in Online Learning, explores some of the approaches being taken by practitioners and policymakers in response to key issues in online learning. The title, Promising Practices, deliberately avoids the term “best practices.” There are too many approaches to online learning, and too many innovative teaching and learning strategies in the 21st century, for one method to be labeled “best.” Instead, this series aims to discuss the issues and explore examples from some of the many online programs across the country, with a goal of illuminating some of the methods showing the most promise.

This Webinar will focus on the important issues of funding online programs and the legislation issues that online educators and learners encounter; this is the topic of the next publication to be released by iNACOL, so this is your chance to contribute and discuss these topics as the study is completed.
