Legal Issues in Higher Education
A wide variety of legislation and court cases have implications for academic freedom and quality higher education. The AAUP monitors legal developments, tracks the legal implications of legislation and its implementation, and works with experts from around the country in submitting friend-of-the-court briefs in key appellate cases, seeking to shape the law in ways supportive of Association principles.
In recent years, the Association has been active in the areas of public employee speech, affirmative action, tenure rights, collective bargaining rights, discrimination, and intellectual property, among others.
See Resources on Legal Issues for a compilation of legal updates and articles on specific legal topics.
