Inpatient & Specialty Services

Here at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, we’re dedicated to improving your child’s life. We strive to offer the best in well-child care as well as emergency medicine and acute care to restore, enhance and sustain your child’s health. ACH offers a variety of inpatient specialty units:

Ambulatory Surgery Services
The Ambulatory Surgery Center accomodates surgical, medical and diagnostic procedures which do not necessitate an inpatient admission. Outpatients who are to receive a general anesthetic, monitored anesthesia care or a regional anesthetic are evaluated in the Ambulatory Surgery Center by a trained, pediatric anesthesiologist. Our facility is utilized for a variety of procedures such as tonsillectomies, ear tubes and other ear surgeries, hernia repairs, circumcision, repair of broken bones, eye surgeries, plastic surgeries, and dental procedures. This one-day surgery facility greatly reduces the cost of surgical procedures and decreases the psychological trauma associated with them.

The Burn Center
The only Burn Center in the state of Arkansas offers quality care for pediatric patients as well as adults. For continuity of care, patients referred to this unit remain in the Burn Center through every phase of care. The Burn Center Team is headed by William Hickerson MD, FACS and is staffed with a clinical nutritionist, a social worker, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a respiratory therapist, a child life specialist and a discharge planning coordinator. Synthethic skin substitutes, constructive surgery and other scientifically advanced technology and procedures are used to speed recovery and improve outcomes. Burn Center staff also provide burn treatment and prevention education programs for communities throughout the state.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Services
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Service at Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH) offers a wide array of surgical care for children with congenital heart disease, heart failure, respiratory failure, chest wall defects and lung disease. The experienced team of surgeons, nurses, perfusionists and anesthesiologists are able to provide surgical services for the most complex cardiac and pulmonary diseases. Specific services include surgery for the single ventricle, transposition of the great arteries, diseased valves, pectus defects and pediatric cardiac transplantation. Surgical services are also provided for ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), including mobile ECMO. The surgical procedures are performed in the Heart Center operating room, with postoperative care rendered in the Heart Center as well. The surgical team works closely with ACH cardiologists and pulmonologists to render these specialized services.

Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit
This 25-bed David Clark Heart Center is an area dedicated to the care of patients with cardiac disease. The Center includes 12 ICU beds, 10 medical/telemetry beds and 3 ECMO beds. The nursing and respiratory staff are specially trained to deal with cardiac patients. This area provides facilities for a variety of diagnoses including postoperative cardiac surgical patients, specialized arrhythmia monitoring, medical treatment of congestive heart failure and newborns with complex congenital heart disease.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Unit
The hospital is equipped to care for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) patients. ECMO, a heart-lung bypass technique, is used to treat infants and children with reversible, life-threatening heart or lung disease when conventional methods have failed. It is most often used to treat infants with meconium aspiration syndrome or congenital diaphragmatic hernia. However, it also can be effective for infants with sepsis, primary pulmonary hypertension, respiratory distress syndrome or barotrauma with air leaks.

General Medicine Unit
The General Medicine Unit is a 17-bed unit focusing on a broad spectrum of medical conditions including renal transplant and dialysis patients and respiratory patients. The Unit also includes three isolation beds.

Hematology/Oncology Unit
The 16-bed Hematology/Oncology Unit provides state-of-the-art patient care and cutting-edge clinical and laboratory research to enhance the care and treatment of patients. The unit includes the Oncology Service (including bone marrow transplantation), the Sickle Cell Program, the Comprehensive Hemophilia Center and the Clinical Apheresis Program. The unit participates in clinical trials, allowing cancer, sickle cell and hemophilia patients to receive the most up-to-date treatment options available anywhere in the country. To provide additional support for families, the unit team includes a pediatric social worker, child life specialist, nutritionist and, when needed, a child psychologist, along with an active parent support group.

Infant/Toddler Unit
The 35-bed Infant/Toddler Unit is a medical unit providing care for infants aged 0-3 with a variety of medical needs. This unit specializes in the care of ventilator-dependent patients and offers a team of skilled nurses and respiratory therapists trained in the special needs of chronically ill patients.

Neuroscience Unit
The 12-bed Neuroscience Unit is the only program in Arkansas devoted to pediatric neurology and neurosurgery and offers patients a comprehensive and coordinated center for the treatment of brain, nervous system and neuromuscular disorders. The Unit offers 24-hour epilepsy monitoring beds as well as a video EEG technician. Within this unit, physicians, nurses and other professionals who specialize in neurological and neurosurgical disorders evaluate, treat and follow up children. This team approach offers the most comprehensive care possible.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The 65-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Arkansas Children’s Hospital is equipped and staffed to deliver a full range of care to critically ill neonates from throughout the state. Specially trained neonatal nurses are available for one-on-one patient care when needed. Neonatologists and pediatric house officers and neonatal nurse practitioners provide coverage to the unit, including 24-hour in-house staff neonatology coverage. Subspecialists from all the pediatric disciplines are available for consultation 24 hours a day.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Dedicated on March 20, 2003, the Donald W. Reynolds Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Arkansas Children's Hospital brings state-of-the-art facilities which allow for a more family-centered approach in pediatric care. The new Reynolds PICU features 22 private patient rooms, a family-focused improvement over the 19-bed ward of the previous unit.

Orthopaedics Unit
The 16-bed Orthopaedics Unit cares for children with a variety of orthopedic-related conditions including fractures, spinal problems and patients who have had the Ilizarov limb-lengthening procedure.

5 North Progressive Rehabilitation Unit
The 5 North Progressive Rehabilitation Unit is  located on the fifth floor of the main hospital.  The unit consists of 10 semi-private rooms which includes the capacity for eight patients requiring ventilator support.  The 5 North Progressive Rehabilitation unit is specialized to provide comprehensive services on an inpatient basis to address the needs of children and adolescents with physical and developmental disabilities. The program is CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited. Team members treating children include: physicians and nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists, speech and language pathologists, audiologists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, child life and education coordinators, psychologists, social workers and discharge planning staff. Goals for the program include maximizing a patient’s functional independence, achievement of developmentally and socially appropriate skills and behavior, and the planning of an effective transition back to community-based support whenever possible.

Renal Dialysis Unit
This 4-bed hemodialysis unit cares for chronic and acute patients with renal failure. The Unit also cares for peritoneal dialysis patients and patients in ICU. Patients cared for in the Renal Dialysis Unit are on dialysis for various medical conditions.The Unit incorporates a specially-trained team of physicians, dialysis nurses, a social worker, a nutritionist and a psychologist. This Unit works with several community services and also offers care for patients visiting from out of town or out of state.

Sleep Disorders
ACH is one of only a few pediatric hospitals in the nation to receive full service accreditation from the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers. Our staff works exclusively with children and adolescents. We have both specialized medical expertise and a unique understanding of the educational and comfort needs of children and their parents. ACH offers advanced techniques for diagnosis and management of sleep problems such as: infant, central and obstructive apnea (absence of breathing during sleep); sleep hygiene; and parasomnias such as sleep walking, sleep talking, night terrors, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, periodic limb movements and sleep phase delay.

Surgery Unit
The 14-bed Surgery Unit offers pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing surgical procedures such as ear, nose, throat (ENT), orthopedic and urologic treatments. In addition, the Surgery Unit cares for patients who have had transplants and other surgical procedures.

Teen & Young Adult Unit
The Teen & Young Adult Unit has 14 beds, including two isolation rooms. This Unit cares for patients with a wide variety of conditions, including those who have been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, eating disorders and diabetes.
