Veteran entertainer LIZA MINNELLI has dazzled critics with her comeback show - making a triumphant return to Broadway after nearly a decade.
The star returned to the New York stage in her headlining show Liza's at the Palace on Wednesday (03Dec08).
Minnelli covers signature songs including Cabaret, I Would Never Leave You and Maybe This Time - which she sings seated on the stage.
Musing about her ability to perform at age 62, she says, "Remember how I used to sit down in the second act? Now I sit down in the first act."
Critics questioned whether Minnelli could make a successful comeback after her hiatus.
But in an early review of the show, the New York Times applauded the singer for what appeared to be the makings of a triumphant return, saying Minnelli was "sounding strong and grounded" as she prepared to take the stage.
And New York Daily News theatre critic Joe Dziemianowicz insists the show is "100 per cent fantastic entertainment," calling the star "fit, funny, surprisingly energetic and in her best voice in ages".
He adds, "Minnelli and company ignite the stage with joy and enthusiasm... (she) is one of a kind, just like New York."
Liza's at the Palace is scheduled to run through 28 December (08).
