RESEARCH INTERESTS

The central goal of my research is deceivingly simple to state: understand the interaction of solar radiation with sea ice. This simple statement belies the rich complexity of the topic. The interaction of solar radiation with sea ice is intimately interrelated with sea ice optical properties, thermodynamics, physical properties, sea ice ecology, and radiative transfer theory. A key element of the problem is relating the optical properties of sea ice to the physical state and structure of the ice. This entails extending the standard physical properties description to include a statistical characterization of the ice microstructure. Because solar radiation dominates the summer melt cycle of sea ice, the optical properties work leads directly into thermodynamics studies. Of special interest is the partitioning of the solar energy between reflection, absorption, and transmission. I have been pursuing these issues through a combination of laboratory studies, field experiments, and theoretical models. Other interests include snow thermodynamics and electromagnetics.

SELECTED RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Over the past decade I have been involved in five major research projects where data and metadata have been compiled as a web site. Results from these efforts can be accessed by clicking on the links below:

Monitoring Arctic Sea Ice - An array of autonomous sea ice mass balance buoys deployed in the Arctic Ocean

HOTRAX 05 - the Healy Oden Trans Arctic Expedition. Observations of sea ice morphology and optical properties.

SHEBA - the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean. Sea ice results from a year-long field experiment conducted in the Arctic Ocean from October 1997 to October 1998.

Southern GLOBEC - Sea ice physical and optical measurements made in the Marguerite Bay region of Antarctica.

Arctic Coastal Ice Processes - a study conducted from 2000 through 2003 in Barrow Alaska focused towards understanding the apportioning of solar radiation over marine and terrestrial Arctic surfaces
