The young Duhamel leaves France before his 20th birthday for extensive travels in Europe, in Africa and in the South Pacific. He arrives in New Zealand with his wife in 1986 and leads a successful 15 years career as a software engineer until 2002 at which times he resumes his artistic pursuits.
A self taught hobbyist and long time recreational draughtsman Mr. Duhamel has been a student of Chrystèle Legardinier (etching on copper plates – 1985) and of David Reid (sculptor and founder -2006). He has been a member of the Catherine Mitchell Life Drawing group since 2004.
His principal inspiration is the female nude which he depicts using graphite pencil on paper with great attention to details. Since 2006, Olivier Duhamel also makes small figurative bronze sculptures. The rapid success of these classical and elegant figurines convinces him to become a full time sculptor.
Like few other sculptors, Olivier Duhamel casts his bronze himself in his Waiheke workshop. This allows him to keep full control over the entire creative process. He prides himself on the quality of his castings.
Olivier Duhamel’ s creations do not convey any particular message, do not attempt any conceptual or symbolist exploration, nor do they search to be innovative at all cost. They are rather trying to simply capture the beauty and sensuality of his subjects.
His bronze works are sold in galleries across New Zealand and in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Paris and Nantes.
Né en France en 1957, Olivier Duhamel est établi depuis 1987 en Nouvelle-Zélande où il vit avec sa femme Marie-France et leurs trois enfants sur la petite île de Waiheke.
Adepte de longue date du dessin à la mine de plomb, Olivier Duhamel fut notamment élève de Christelle Legardinier à Dieppe (gravure sur cuivre et eau forte) et de David Reid à Auckland (bronze). Il a redémarré sa carrière artistique en 2002 après une période de 15 ans dans l'informatique.
Sa principale source d'inspiration est le nu féminin qu'il interprète au crayon de papier avec un grand souci du détail. Il crée également depuis 2006 de petites sculptures figuratives en bronze. Le succès rapide que remportent ces figurines de style classique et d’allure élégante, le décide à se consacrer à la sculpture à plein temps.
Comme peu d’autres sculpteurs, Olivier Duhamel fond et coule le métal lui même et contrôle donc le processus créatif en entier depuis son atelier où, fidèle a son souci du détail, il s’attache à produire des fontes de grande qualité.
Ses créations ne transmettent aucun message particulier et ne recherchent ni l’innovation à tout prix, ni l’exploration conceptuelle ou symboliste mais s’attachent simplement à capturer avec maîtrise la grâce et la sensualité de ses sujets d’études.
Ses œuvres sont représentées dans plusieurs galeries de Nouvelle-Zélande mais aussi à Melbourne, Sydney, Adélaïde, Paris et Nantes.
