Maps and Atlases

Atlases

NCSU Libraries has a large collection of atlases as well as collections of 8 1/2 x 11" maps suitable for photocopying and including in reports. An atlas case near the Reference Desk at D. H. Hill houses a small number of current world atlases.  Because atlases tend to be large books, many of them will be shelved in the "Oversized" area of D. H. Hill Library, on the 9th floor.

Finding Atlases in the Library Catalog

Use "atlases" or "atlas" as a keyword in searching the library's online catalog, along with other search terms such as a country name.

More hints ...

Atlases can be thematic as well as providing basic geographical and political boundaries. You may want to try searches with combinations of terms to locate cultural atlases or atlases that supply a historical perspective. Examples:

A title keyword search for "cultural" and "atlas" and "india" gives you:

  • Cultural Atlas of India : India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka / Gordon Johnson. New York : Facts on File, c1996.

A keyword search for "world war II" and "atlas" gives you:

  • The Historical Atlas of World War II / John Pimlott ; foreword by Alan Bullock. New York : H. Holt, 1995.
