USGS Maps

Both topographic and thematic maps produced by the United States Geological Survey are available at NCSU Libraries.

USGS Topographic Maps

Scale    Extent
1:24,000    North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
1:100,000    Partial coverage of the United States
1:250,000    Regions of the United States

Location: 1:24,000 scale topo maps for North Carolina are available in D H Hill Library in the newspaper reading area and some are also available at  Natural Resources Library. Older topographic maps for the state of North Carolina are retained permanently. Topo maps in other scales and for other regions are at the Satellite Shelving Facility.

Access: 1:24,000 scale maps are shelved alphabetically by quadrangle names. Recent maps are listed in the online library catalog. Topographic indexes online can be found at Mapsport.

USGS Thematic Series

Includes Coal Investigations, Geologic Quadrangles, Hydrologic Investigations, Miscellaneous Geologic Investigations, Land Use and Land Cover, Miscellaneous Field Studies, Mineral Investigations Resources, Oil and Gas Investigations, Charts and Maps, Circum-Pacific maps, and State Hydrological Unit Maps.

Location: Satellite Shelving Facility.  While most thematic series maps are shelved in the Maps Collection, some series, such as the Water Resources Investigations maps, are shelved with the U.S. Government Documents.  If you don't find what you need, ask a librarian for assistance.

Access: Hydrologic Unit maps are filed by state. Other maps are filed by their USGS number. You may use the online National Geologic Map Database or the hardcopy index to obtain filing numbers for these map series. Guide to USGS Publications - D. H. Hill - Reference QE77 .G84 1996.
