Most materials may be borrowed for 14 days. DVDs and items from the Bestseller collection may be borrowed for 7 days. The number of items you may borrow at any one time is limited according to the type of material. See librarian for details.
Items issued for 14 days may be renewed unless they are on hold for another customer. You may also inquire about extended loan (up to a maximum of eight weeks) at time of checkout, provided the item is not on request. DVDs may be renewed for one additional 7-day period provided the items are not on request. An initial extended loan of 14 days may be available for DVDs that are not in high demand. 7-day bestsellers are not renewable and are not eligible for extended loan. You may renew your own items in the Library at any catalog computer. You may also renew items via the Internet (www.slcl.org) or by calling 314-994-3300 and then asking for renewals. (TDD 314-994-9255)
You may return St. Louis County Library materials to any branch or bookmobile. Book drops are open at all hours at Headquarters and all branches. Materials may also be returned to reciprocal libraries.
Fines are levied for items returned after the due date. The fine for 14-day items checked out from branches or community bookmobiles is 15¢ per item per day (maximum of $5 per item per checkout). The fine for items issued for fewer than 14 days is 25¢ per item per day (maximum of $10 per item per checkout). The maximum amount of fines and/or billed items allowed on a library card is $15. Fines of $15 or more must be paid before the card can be used again.
A 6-day grace period for returning materials will be instituted beginning January 1, 2008. The grace period will be for 14-day items only. Fines are not charged for Sundays or holidays. Fines will start accruing as soon as the item is overdue, but will not be collected until the grace period has ended.
You will be notified by email or U.S. mail when items are 29 days overdue. A second notice will be sent by U.S. mail when items are 45 days past due. If the item is not returned within 10 days, its full cost will appear on your account. If you subsequently return the item, only the applicable fine will be charged.
You may place a hold on most 14-day items that are not currently on the shelf either by reserving the item through a computer or by asking a librarian. Most DVDs are also available for request. The maximum number of holds that a customer can have at any one time is 25. Requested items will be sent to your local branch or bookmobile as quickly as possible. Request service is not available to reciprocal cardholders who live in communities that are members of the Municipal Library Consortium.
You will be notified that your request is ready for pick-up. You may choose the most convenient form of notification: telephone, email or U.S. Postal Service.
You are responsible for all items issued on your card. Report lost cards to the Library immediately. Materials issued on your card prior to the time the loss is reported remain your responsibility. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for all materials issued on cards for children under age 18. The staff is here to help you, so if you have further questions, please ask a librarian!
