4 Easy Ways to Green Your Home Office

Posted by Valencia on October 11th, 2008

I’m new to the whole green living concept. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m interested in the environment. But up until recently, I didn’t go out of my way to be eco-friendly. My husband hipped me to the idea, and at first, I considered it a huge inconvenience. But once I got into a routine, and acknowledged my own wasteful tendencies, I was able to grasp the bigger picture.

Consider a few easy ways to green your home business/office:

1. Use Less Power: This is a hard one, but it can be accomplished. People who work from home use a lot of energy. We have computer monitors running, lights on, the air condition on full blast, etc. But there are ways to cut back and save energy. For starters, turn off the computer and printer when you finish working. Turn down the heat or air, and wear more or less clothes. Also, consider energy efficient light bulbs. I know you’ve seen those twisty light bulbs at Home Depot. They’re supposed to last longer than traditional light bulbs and use less power. If you really want to save money, install solar panels. The initial expense is costly, but you’ll save money in the long run.

2. Use Less Paper: I used to be a print addict. Whether it was an article online or information from a client, I would print the document on the spot. Looking back, I was wasteful. Computers and programs have bookmarks and memory cards so we don’t have to print every single document. And when I do have to print something, I make a conscious effort to use the front and back of the paper. Yeah, it’s a extra step, but I save a lot of paper.

3. Recycle: Recycling doesn’t come natural for me, but I’m trying. Practically everything inside your home office is recyclable - paper, soda cans, plastic, ink cartridges, old phone books, etc. Also, it doesn’t hurt to reuse miscellaneous office supplies such as paperclips, delivery boxes, thumbtacks, and rubber bands.

4. Buy Green Office Products: If you really want to green your home business or office, look for a “green” office supplier. Popular green supplies include recycled printer paper, recycled bins, environmentally-friendly office furniture, and biodegradable cleaning supplies.
