A Message from the Chancellor

Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D.
As Arkansas’ only academic health sciences center, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences fulfills a unique role in providing comprehensive health care to patients; educating many of the state’s health care professionals; providing a home for cutting-edge scientific research; and offering outreach programs and services that directly benefit thousands of Arkansans every year.
UAMS has grown from a small medical school with a charity hospital into an academic health center and research leader that today receives more than $100 million annually in national research grants and contracts and has an annual economic impact in Arkansas of $5 billion. We have been able to develop world-class programs and centers of excellence that have drawn patients from every state in the United States and many foreign countries. UAMS has also been able to attract talented clinicians and researchers who provide quality patient care, instruct tomorrow’s health care professionals and conduct valuable research.
The tireless and loyal support of UAMS friends and employees has provided us much of the momentum for our successes over the years. Looking ahead, we know there will be continued challenges with exploding demand for health care access as well as shortages of trained personnel in all areas of health care.
In planning how to best address these challenges, along with securing the long-term financial position of UAMS, we know that clinical expansion is an essential component. Our patient care – or clinical – programs are by far UAMS’ greatest funding source. Our solid financial standing now allows us to expand our facilities, and increase the number of patients we can serve.
Despite completion of the Harry P. Ward Tower in 1997, the hospital’s core inpatient facilities are outmoded and not suited to renovation. Outpatient facilities are also no longer capable of meeting the demand for services, thus constraining patient volume and income.
Our expansion plans are focused on allowing us to continue meeting our patient care, education, research and community service missions for many years to come.
