Resident Training
We welcome your interest in residency at the UAMS Department of Psychiatry. Our goal is to produce educated, well-trained, professional physicians. We believe that a solid clinical base is essential before psychiatrists can reach their highest potential, not only as clinicians, but also as academicians, researchers, and administrators.
Our residency is an ACGME-approved, four-year program that accepts up to eight residents per year. Currently, the general residency has 27 residents. In addition we offer fellowships in Child and Adolescent, Forensics, Addictions, and NIMH sponsored research. We plan to obtain approval for a Geriatrics Fellowship in the next year.
We have an excellent clinical faculty – many who have long been favorites among medical students. We recruit medical students into psychiatry at a rate much higher than the national average. There is an emphasis on teaching in our residency and a mutual respect between residents and faculty.
We are all excitedly awaiting the opening of our new building which will house the recently created Psychiatric Research Institute, one of only nine such institutes in the country. This will be a five story, 100,000 square foot space which will house clinical, administrative, research, and educational activities. It is the sixth Center of Excellence on the UAMS campus. It will allow the Department of Psychiatry to come together as a unit and function in an even more collaborative manner.
Thanks for your interest. Please do not hesitate to contact us personally anytime.
Sincerely,
Ben Guise , M.D.
