Post Graduate Year III

Third-year residents gain advanced experience and training in outpatient clinics, consult/liaison services, and in an emergency/evaluation clinic. The lecture/seminar series includes advanced clinical topics and preparation for board exams.

Clinical Rotations
All third-year residents are assigned to a six-month block of outpatient care in two diverse clinics: one, a general psychiatric clinic available to residents of the greater Little Rock area; the other, a clinic serving the severely mentally ill who are mainstreamed into the general population. The other six months of this year are spent on the consult/liaison services at two hospitals and a psychiatric emergency/evaluation clinic. (See block diagram below).

Didactics
On Tuesday afternoons, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. throughout the year, the PGY III’s attend two sessions of lectures/seminars. Some of the advanced clinical topics include substance abuse, clinical neuroscience, PTSD, sexual dysfunction, gender disorders and practice issues. Case conference subjects include forensics and short-term dynamic psychotherapy. The PGY III’s and IV’s also have a series of sessions on how to prepare for the oral board exam. These activities give the residents an opportunity to practice the interview portion of the exam with a faculty member who is a board examiner.
