General Reference sources

Bartlett's Book of Familiar Quotations
This site offers an on-line version of this popular book. Like the book itself, quotes are listed by author or, alternatively, you can search based on keywords.
Electric Library
This site contains a searchable database containing full-text of more than 150 newspapers and newswires, 2,000 books, hundreds of magazines (many education-related!); a complete encyclopedia; TV and radio transcripts, and over 28,000 photographs. A free 2-week trial subscription is available, but monthly charges after that are approximately $10.00 with a site license available for schools and libraries.
Internet Public Library
The Internet Public Library was created to provide services and information which enhance the value of the Internet to its ever-expanding and varied community of users. As a sample of their material: their Reference Center has sections on education, health and medical sciences, science and technology, and reference-ready references; and their Youth section has story books (text version and audio versions, information on math and science, and book reviews by other kids.
Language Translation services
This site contains a list of resources offering free translation to/from languages such as Spanish, French, German, Russian, Zulu, Chinese, and Italian.
LOGOS (Multi-language dictionary)
This site offers the ability to specify a word and then return that word in a variety of languages. For instance, "blind" came up with cieco (Italian), aveugle and borgne (French), and many more.
News Index
For an all-in-one source to scan articles in current editions/releases of major news sources such as The New York Times, The Boston Globe and CNN, try News Index. It allows you to enter search terms and then retrieves story headlines from a continuously updated database of news appearing on hundreds of news sites on the web. Yet another Yahoo area, this area allows you to search various categories of reference material, such as: encyclopedias, finance, libraries, quotations, journals, almanacs, etc.
Zip Code Lookup
Through this U.S. Postal Service site, you can find out a zip code, given an address, or find out what cities and zip codes are associated with one another.

Special Education

ERIC Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education (ERIC EC)
This site is one of many federally funded clearinghouses in a nationwide information network sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and National Library of Education. It offers literature, information and resources relating to the education and development of persons of all ages who have disabilities and/or who are gifted. Their FAQ's on pros and cons of mainstreaming are particularly useful.You can also search various ERIC and ECER databases containing journal articles, conference proceedings, papers, speeches, research reports, teaching guides and curriculum, and books relating to education.
LOUIS
LOUIS (formerly known as CARL ET AL) is available free of charge from the American Printing House web site. It is a unique database of materials created by hundreds of agencies across North America (volunteer, government, non-profit, and commercial). This database provides one quick, complete, centralized method of locating these materials in accessible format.
Yahoo / Education links
Part of the well-known Yahoo search engine site, this area contains links to many sites relating to such categories as: educational standards and testing, educational theory and methods, K-12 and0 special education.
